I thought flu season was OVER! My daughter just got the stomach flu for the 2nd time in a year. I think she picked it up at daycare, but has no fever anymore, but she's been throwing up today and a little bit yesterday. Does anyone else's little one have it and is there anything I can do to ease her symptoms before I end up getting it and won't be able to take as good a care of her?? Thanks!

Hi Brooke Hugs to you and your LO! There is a bad stomach flu going around and my DS 18 mos, just got over it. It did take him a week before he was toatally himself. There wasn't much to do for the symptoms, I am afraid. My doc just said Motrin for the fever and no dairy or juice, but to push pedialyte to prevent dehydration. My son would not drink the flavored pedialyte so the doc said to mix the unflavored king with a little ginger ale or gatorade to taste and that it was ok to give him flat ginger ale alone. The ginger ale did make his tummy feel better I think. I did not push food at all, just let him lead the way on that and I think that helped. He came down with it on Monday and Saturday was the first day he really ate meals again, and they were small. If the vomiting gets too bad the doc will give nausea suppositories. I did not catch it, nor did DH so good luck on that, I hope you don't get it!

I can't help you but I wanted to say that I have a horrible stomach virus, but I can't tell if DD has it. Her stools are normal, but she doesn't want to eat. She will occasionally drink an ounce or two, but that's it and she won't touch solids. She has no fever (neither did I). But why won't she eat? Do you guys think she has it?

I think we will go to the doc tomorrow.

How old is your DD? I hope there is someone who is able to care for her while you have this virus and hopefully she won't (or doesn't) have it. That's my concern...who will watch DD while I'M sick?
sheesh! all these things to think about when we become parents. I know my grandma would take care of her for me, but the thought of my poor granny catching such an awful bug is unbearable. She's old, I'm young, I just don't want to do that to her!
I think if your DD has a fever longer than 24 hrs. then you should defnitely bring her in, but if there is no fever, then I'd just say to let her get a LOT of rest and maybe give her water or pedialyte if she really is sick, has a fever or diarrhea(sp?), or possibly even flat 7-up or gingerale like the last poster said...depending on how old she is. Hope everything goes well for you!

Awww Brooke sorry to hear this....Hugs!!!

Well there are a few things you can do. I dont think this is a flu but there is a virus that is always around year long that lingers everywhere. THere are so many types of virus' but rotavirus is common and causes diarrhea. One thing to remember that is with a virus that causes diarrhea that it causes stomach cramping that is very painfull and involuntary.(she wont be able to control it so she will scream)

Keep her on the Brat diet(B=Bananas, R=Rice, A=Applesauce, T=Toast) do not give applejuice, any juices or water. Give pedialyte or cola in water if nessesary but mostly ONLY pedialyte. Cola in water soothes the tummy. Just take cola put in cup take a fork or spoon and mix till bubbles are gone and put it in some water and give. Yes i know most poeple dont want to give soda but cola truely does help and you can always say that it is going to make her feel better.

The rule of thumb is do not give anything but clear liquids, you want to flush this thing out so you dont give anything that will constipate her. You want the virus to take its course and get out of her system. If she is throwing up still then she should only be drinking pedialyte at this point NO WATER at all only pedialyte because water will cause her to vomit(have no clue why but it always does)...

Wash your hands after every time you change her atleast for the count of your alphebet.(that is atleast 25 seconds sung slowly)

Use a bleach solution for disinfecting on your door knobs(all of them),light switches, toilet bowls and dont forget the handles to the flusher, potty seats if you have a potty training tot, the bathroom floors and especially the bathtub that she is bathing in. Also if you have washed her clothes that have been soiled in the washing machine, then run a hot water cycle with nothing in it with some bleach and let is stand there after it is full for alteast 30 mins. rinse and then lysol it. If she soils again then wash those separately and if htey are real bad just toss them. I always say if you can just put old clothes on them or just a tshirt and diaper do so because if that gets dirty its just a tshirt. I buy them all the time because my kids are always sick but it's far worth it for me to buy new tshirts then have that stuff lingering in my washing machine. I have 4 kids we get sick a lot here.

My kids are 12,4,almost 3 and almost 1(yes I am nuts LOL). the two toddlers get sick from touching stuff when we go to the stores. LIke the shopping carts and such so dont be surprised it that really might be the problem..also we have found out that the place they were at the other day a dr's office for me had toys and that is where they got the latest illness of diarrhea. I was not thrilled at all and it was hte only place they were so i know for sure and they do not go to daycare so i know.

you wont get the house germ free but you can make sure that the things you touch are cleaned well and that will help you not get sick if you havent gotten sick already.

She must drink and if she is hungry and is not throwing up then give her some crackers with salt on them. Make sure you run this all by your dr. just in case there might be medical history other than what you are saying that htey might want to do something else.

The best thing you can do is keep others aways from her. I know she will hav e to go to daycare but I mean at home, likeother kids or people with kids atleast till she is over this. Open those windows and get that aired out and get those germs outta there!;)

Good luck hon

Mama is right -- it's not the flu, per se... probably rotavirus. Pretty common and easily treated for normal diarrhea and vomiting symptoms. See the doctor for help with those things since you don't want baby to get dehydrated.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for all the advice. I have heard of Rotavirus, but was never sure of exactly what it was. My DD probably DID have that rather than the flu. I got a little something from her I think, however not as severe. I also work at a preschool so I could have gotten it from the other children I am with as they are all aged 3-5. We sent two kids home Tuesday who were throwing up (why their parents put them on the school bus in the first place is beyond me!) 5 min. into the bus ride one of my students tapped me on the shoulder (I am also their bus aide as well as teacher) and said she had to throw up and her eyes were as big as golf balls. I felt so bad for her...I just think there is some kind of awful virus possibly going around.
I swear...it NEVER end when you have children around. Just when everyone gets healthy and things resume to normal there is some other kind of yucky bug around the corner. I try to see the positive side and think that my DD is building up her immunities...if it were an option I'd be a stay at home mom and shield my baby from as many illnesses as possible. I guess even children who stay at home get sick too, though! I've just been taking AIRBORNE pills and hoping they work!!
