My mother had a hip replacement 12 years ago and now she is feeling pain again. She's afraid the replacement is going to "pop out". Is it possible for the replacement to wear out? What does she need to do about this. I've asked her to go to the doc but she's stubborn about it.

Hip replacements do wear out. Most replacements have a lifetime of about 10-15 years depending on how active the person is. She needs to see an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hip replacements. They will do a standard Xray of the hip and evaluate the status of the prostetic. Depending on what type of replacement she has had will depend on what type of surgery needs to be done. This is necessary and if she continues to ignore it..she is at risk for falling..and goodness knows she doesnt need to fracture the other one or cause injury to herself. The new prosthetics out last longer and are of better quality..but hip replacements do not last forever and she needs to see an hip replacement surgeon to evaluate the health of what is currently in there
I sure do wish her the best. I just had a total knee replacement at 42 years old and it isnt any fun.
take care

Thank you so much for your reply. I will tell my Mom what you said and she can take it from there. Thanks!

What Quile has told you is right not that they needed to know that. Here in Australia most doctors wouldn't look at anyone under 60 as like Quile has said the time life of these is relitivly short and if you got one at 40 then you could well and truelt looking at about 3 to 4 more operations. But then they do make people wait too long and then it has gone past the point of repair. This is what is happening here. The Tattman.
