View Full Version : Using birth control as an emergency contraceptive

I had intercourse last night and the condom failed and my initial thought was to take an emergency contraceptive. I had a pack of the pill Lessina on hand (even though I was not taking it daily) and read on a website that it can be used as an ECP. The site said to take 5 pills within the first 120 hours and then another 5 pills 12 hours later. I called a nurse at a local doctor's office here and asked if she could verify the effectiveness in that and she said she didn't know anything about it. Does anyone have imput on using BC as ECPs? I would just go buy the Plan B pill (morning after) except they are 50.00 here and I'm not sure my insurance covers it.

The Planned Parenthood website has a chart of BCP dosages that can make BCP work like ECP.

It doesn't list every brand of pill available, but if you check your brand's estrogen, progesterin, etc levels, you will probably find an equivalent.

Since BCP and ECP are basically the same thing and work the same way, using your pills as ECP should work. Just make sure you get the correct dosage. The one you give is the right dosage for some, but not all.
