There is a good thread here on what cause people to have palpitations. It is excellent:

I am wondering if people can comment on how long their palpitations typically last, and if certain causes create longer bouts than other causes.

Mine last anywhere from less than 10 minutes and up to 2-3 hours. After about an hour if I can't stop them with a BB or xanax and I get dizzy, I will call 911 or have someone take me to the hospital to be converted.
Only one incident of being longer than an hour in the past 6 and a half years, so my SVT issue may not be as severe as others and hence ablation has not been suggested for me.

BB is a beta blocker medication. It helps regulate and slow heartbeats. A side effect can be dizziness if one is unable to tolerate.

Yes, its a Beta Blocker. I take 25mg of Atenolol and it usually does a good job. I have seen my bpm in the low 50s before after taking one.
