I found out today that after my surgery, the doctor will come out and speak with the person who is taking me home.
However, in my case its my husband who is taking me home, and he has some significant problems with short term memory. He's perfectly fine in driving me home, putting me to bed, and following any instructions that have been written down. But when it comes to listening to new information and making use of it 10 or 15 minutes later - that just won't be able to happen.
I thought I had it covered by printing out all the instructinos beforehand, but then I was thrown this whole thing of "the doctor will come out and speak with whomever is driving you home".
But the question - what sort of things were you or your "driver" told after surgery? I'm having open carpal tunnel surgery, and cubital tunnel surgery with a subcutaneous transfer of the ulnar nerve, and will be sent home in a full arm splint and sling.
I'm thinking of having my husband carry a mini tape recorder like he does for lectures, if the instructions are ones *I* need later in the day. Or would I need someone else there who could carry out instructions immediately?
I'm hoping everything is uneventful and I'm worrying for nothing, but just in case?
