Hi Ladies,

I'm totally out of it right now so I'm not going to post much but see how addicted I am to this bb :) All went well and it was so easy. I'm just tired and dizzy, kind of like I'm drunk :p

All you new IVFers will have no problems. The IV hurt more than the ER. I'll give details later after I take a nap. Just wanted to let you all know it's over and I did well. Oh yeah, I had 17 eggs too! :blob_fire Way more than I ever thought!

I'm back and feeling a little more normal now. It was really quick, they told me I'd be there for 3-4 hours (including getting there the 1 hour early) but I was only there for a little over 2 hours. They were running early too so my retrieval was at 10 instead of 10:30. Then I only live 10 minutes away so it was a quick ride home. So here are all the details for my newbie IVF buddies that wanted to know:) :

I checked in at the recovery room which looked much like an emergency room - beds all around with the curtains. First you dress into one of those hospital gowns and then go lay on the bed. Nurses came over and explained what the whole procedure was going to be and I asked lots of questions. Doctors came by and introduced themselves too. Everyone was so nice. Next they came to put the IV in. I had never had one before and have horrible viens so I was super nervous about this part. It felt just like the pricks when I get blood drawn so it wasn't bad. Once it was in it felt kind of uncomfortable but not really painful (so CBB- I know you can do it if I can!;) ).

Once the IV was in, DH had to leave to give his "sample" and I was so afraid I was going to freak out alone but I really didn't. Next they make you go to the bathroom and then I walked into the OR myself. All I remember in the OR is getting up on the table, the embryologist checking my bracelet with the paperwork, one of the nurses putting my legs in the stirrups (the stirrups are at your thighs instead of your feet), and then I told the anestiologist (spelling?) that my chest felt heavy. Next thing I knew I was back in the recovery room with DH. It was really that easy. I had some bleeding and cramping but honestly AF cramps and bleeding are worse so it's nothing you haven't felt before.

Now I feel pretty good. I'm a bit uncomfortable but not as much as I was before the ER with all those eggs in me so it's an improvement. I know how scary this seems when you haven't gone through it but I promise my newbie IVF friends that what's in your head is ten times worse than the experience. I had all kinds of horror stories going on in my head and it was nothing like that. If I missed anything, ask away while it's still fresh in my head. :D

Mapia/Kathy, They won't call me with a fertilzation report but they said if I call tomorrow they will tell me how many fertilized. I won't know quality or anything like that until I go in for the transfer. It stinks I have to wait but what can I do. I'm not doing ICSI or assisted hatching so I'm praying many fertilize on their own. Since my DH has good swimmers my RE gave us a 90% chance that things would fertilize fine on their own.

I'm doing a 3-day transfer so Monday is my next big day. I am still doing acupuncture. I went in last night for a treatment and then will go in again on Monday before the transfer.

I'll let you guys know tomorrow when I find out how many fertilized. I'm hoping for a lot too so I can freeze some. I'm still trying to be positive that this cycle is going to work and I will only need them for a sibling in a few years. Wouldn't that be great? :)

Thanks Lori!!! Well every office is different at least you can call and find out how many fertilized. That is great you do not have to do ICSI or hatching as it will cost me $2,500 more so good for you!!! It sounds like you have a great chance for lot's to fertlize and hopefully freeze some too. YOU ARE GOING TO GET A BFP!!! But I think it will be great if you had some to freeze for a sibling!! :)

Thanks again for all the info!!! Have a great weekend!!

Wow Lori that is wonderful news!! I cant believe that you had 17,that is a lot. I hope that they all fertilize, that way you will have a bunch to freeze for further use. Well good luck on fertilization and your transfer. So what day will you be transferring on. We might be doing our transfers on the same day. Im doing a FET and my transfer is on Wednesday. That would be neat if ours were on the same day we can be on the wait together!!!Well good luck!!!

Best Wishes,April

Lori, our little chicken, who laid 17 eggs ;) I must stay you did superb that too being a first time IVFer:blob_fire . I had only 10 eggs when I had my first IVF.
I have a Q for you - why are you going for Day 3 transfer coz as far as my experience with RE in my last 2 IVF cycles, he had always mentioned it could be either day 3 or 5 depending upon the fertilization of the embryos.
fyi...Day 5 transfers have better success rate than day 3 so you may want to have a word with your RE.

Did you get the fert. report for today how many are growing ? I'm sure you should come up with great numbers of developed embryos and shud be able to freeze some. Lots of baby luck.

Hi everyone,

No fert. report today. When I called they said they won't look at them until tomorrow so I don't know why they told me to call. I was upset but am over it now. Hopefully I have lots of little embies growing right now and will get a great news call tomorrow :)

Golds, I think my clinic has more success with 3-day transfers so that is what they do. I'm sure every clinic is different.

I'll let you all know when I get the fert. report call tomorrow.

Hi Lori! I just have a quick question for you. Did your RE actually do your egg retrieval? I was looking at our notebook on IVF, and it mentioned that any of the qualified medical staff may perform the retrieval/transfer, due to the drs. demanding schedule. But I would have thought that the RE you've been seeing all along would have done the surgery. Otherwise what would be the point of choosing one specific dr.? Just something I was wondering about.

Thanks, Susan!

Kat, No, my RE did not do the ER. I asked the same questions when we met for our IVF consult. I really wanted my RE to do it since he's the one we're putting all our trust in and I haven't even met the other REs. They have a schedule and whoever is in the OR that day does all the ERs and ETs. I guess it makes sense because they can't be in there every day and how could they schedule any other appointments with patients if they never knew until 2 days before if they'd be doing an ER. It does stink for the patient but I believe it is how most larger clinics work.

Thanks for answering my question, Lori. I agree that it would be nice to have your RE do the procedures, but I understand it from their point of view as well. I apologize for not telling you this sooner, but congratulations on your ER! I am very glad that everything went so smoothly for you. I will be praying that you get a BFP!

Lori, I can't wait to hear how many little embries you have! I'm sure their little cells are multiplying like crazy! Good luck tomorrow!! :)

Kat, my clinic is smaller, so my RE did the retrieval and transfers. They have two doctors who specialize in IVF and a third who is strictly surgery for things like endo and tube blockages. I think that most clinics probably do not have that kind of specialized attention though due to larger size.

Hey Lori, how are those little embryos doing? I was hoping to hear the fertilization report. Did you get any news? I'm pulling for you and your little ones in the making. :)

Holly

Nevermind. ;) I just saw the report in the IVF thread. Great news!!!!

Hey Lori. I am glad to see that all went very well at your ER!! I pray that many of them fertilized by today so that you will have lots to work with.

One question... I think you have had a lap done. Was being put to sleep for the lap very similar to your experience being put to sleep for the ER? I know you said you told the anes. that your chest felt heavy and then you just remember waking up. My lap is tomorrow so just wondering. I am having the last minute jitters.

Good luck today!! Let us know how it all goes!!

Anna Leigh
