It took me three different rounds of antibiotics and a whole summer once to clear a UTI. Ugh.

When I'd call the doc's office near the end of a round of meds still complaining of discomfort, they'd tell me to wait a few days for the med to get out of my system before I could be rechecked. They also said that even if the bacteria is killed, often just the inflammation associated with a UTI can cause the same symptoms as the bacteria. Double ugh!

Even after the third round of meds (which the last one was Macrobid) and continued discomfort, although bacteria-free urine tests at that point, I basically changed my diet up a bit to a more heart-healthy, antiinflammatory diet, and the pain/discomfort stopped. I did this for high cholesterol; had no idea it might improve my UTI symptoms -- or whatever was still causing me problems from that UTI.

Definitely don't hesitate to contact your doctor, tho. You should be rechecked anyway after you're finished with the antibiotic to make sure it did its job.

Hope you get to feeling real better real soon :)

Macrobid was the final antibiotic. First was Floxin, which felt like it was working the first few days, but the pain returned about day six of the med. Then we tried Cipro and had the same result as the Floxin -- okay at first, but then the burning urination and flank pain returned right around halfway through taking it.

In both of these cases, I finished the antibiotic, returned to the doc's office to be retested. In the doc's office, the test showed I had a UTI infection, but when my sample was actually cultured by a lab (I guess to confirm the type of bacteria it is), it was negative. By the time I was getting the results from the lab, I was right around day six or seven into a different med. They'd always want me to finish the med, give it another day or two to get out of my system, then come in to get rechecked.

The Macrobid gave me a horrible reaction. Migraines and trouble breathing. I'd given it about five days before I finally called the doc's office and was going to ask to be switched to something else. I was still having the burning/flank pain. The nurse said my culture came back negative for bacteria and to stop the Macrobid  . That's when she told me about the inflammation causing UTI-like symptoms, and we switched topics over to cholesterol (among all of this craziness, I'd gotten bloodwork to see if my kidneys were causing this ... kidneys were okay, but the cholesterol was high).

I'm sure one of those antibiotics did its job, but there were times where I felt like the different meds, when apparently I might not have needed one, were actually causing pain. But you can't mess around with a UTI, you know?

Best of luck in getting yours knocked out. You drinking plenty of water? Do whatever you need to to avoid a yeast infection after all these antibiotics, too. All those different antibiotics can really screw up your immune system and GI system. Take a look over at the urology boards, too. Lots of helpful info and support over there on UTIs that take forever to resolve.

yeah the macrobid is definitely effecting my stomach, ugh! and i get slight headaches. my diets pretty healthy actually, im trying to GAIN weight out of all things, right now, and i've given up coffee b/c of the UTI (this hasn't helped my headaches i'm sure!) anyways, i'll try to be more patient..as you said. i've definitely acquired a pretty negative attitude after all of this. thanks again.

I've been on macrobid and for me it was THE best uti treatment and it started to work within about 3 days. I had a ten day course if I remember it right. Try to give it a few more days. Everyone is different so if you still feel bad after about 7-8 days, go back to the doctor and get something different. It could be possible that this isn't even caused by a bacteria.

Also remember to drink plenty of water.
