Sponsor KathleenW 05-12-2007, 08:27 AM My son began speech therapy at 30 months and ABA therapy at 32 months. My son's speech is perfect and his cognitive levels are exceptional. He is in a regular first grade class with no assistance. Since Kindergarten he has made straight A's. He never complains about homework since he has been doing school work at home since he was 2. If you are interested in starting an ABA program, I recomend the book "Let Me Hear Your Voice" by Catherine Maurice. It is a true story about a family that used ABA to make their children indistinguishable from their peers. My son did not have Asperger Syndrome (which I think is easier to overcome if you have early intervention) he was diagnosed with mild PDD at 30 months. jeffreys mom 05-14-2007, 10:42 PM Hi Relay; I highly recommend ABA therapy. I feel it has helped my son tremendously. It's a structured, neutral way of teaching the children to help them meet their potential. It's great for the parents as well since it teaches you the best ways to redirect the undesired behaviors and praise the things that are accomplishments. It's like taking a course in Advanced Parenting. ckkids 05-15-2007, 02:22 AM Hi Relay, I recommend ABA completely...that coupled with biomedical interventions has helped our son overcome so many challenges and excel academically and socially. Best of luck to you. laura11870 05-21-2007, 05:42 PM Hi Relay, I recommend ABA completely...that coupled with biomedical interventions has helped our son overcome so many challenges and excel academically and socially. Best of luck to you. Hi, my nephew is newly diagnosed with mild autism. I've been doing a lot of research regarding biomedical intervention and was wondering what have you tried that works? There's so much information out there and I don't know where to start or what to try. Any information would be greatly appreciated. moonflower32 05-24-2007, 03:26 AM I've worked with several kids doing ABA therapy over the past eight years. In my experience I would say that it can be very successful. The most important thing to me is that the families understand that therapy is 24/7, not just when the therapists are there working with the child. If you read about ABA, and truly understand it, you'll find that it's really just a good way to teach a child. Some of the children need things broken down in tiny pieces to learn them and others can handle learning things in bigger pieces. I have two typical (normal) children and I use the basics of the therapy to get through some of our issues. I haven't been able to work in a while because of health problems but if you have questions or need help getting started I'm here. Remember every child is different and you can't expect your child to be like any other that you may see or read about. I've met so many parents that get down because they compare what they read to what they anticipate the future of their child will be. These kids are so special and lovable...each one is unique and each has potential to improve. I am passionate about them and helping them. I miss the work so much. I'm considering taking one child to care for in my home.. using the basics of ABA therapy. As you'll find out, if you haven't already, it can be quite expensive. Doing it in my home I could double as day care and the cost would be more manageable. It does break the protocol somewhat, but if it's the only way a family can manage to afford it I know it would be worth it. |
