I was wondering if you could help me out. I'm not sure if my problem is depression related, or even considered a disorder, but I need a lot of sleep to start my day. Sometimes I can sleep for 20 hours, and it worries me because I'm heading off to college this year and I want to be an active 18 year old. Is there a disorder where you sleep too much?

PS. I'm sorry for the people who *don't* get enough sleep, I would give you my hours if I could!

yes it could be. You should have your doctor refer you to a sleep specialist. It could be nothing, or it could be a couple of different things. Maybe you need more sleep because your quality of sleep isn't very good, for example.

Hypopnea.. low oxygenation of the blood while sleeping will keep you in a depressed state and leave you fatigued and feeling you need to sleep more. You need to see a sleep specialist. If it is hypopnea based sleep apnea, you must get it diagnosed and treated. My husband was this same way and returns to this state if he fails to sleep on his CPAP for even one night.

Sincerely,

I agree with the other posters that you should see the doctor. You might also want to do a quick check against a list of symptoms of sleep apnea online. Quick questions I would ask based on your post (though I'm definitely not a doctor) are: do you feel depressed? are you still tired after sleeping 20 hours? do you experience headaches often after waking? Based on your post it could one of many things - one of which may be a sleep disorder - but I have personally suffered from sleep apnea and depression (years before ever developing a sleep disorder) so some professional guidance is the way to go.

Good luck!

Check out sleep cycle (circadian rhythms) on the internet also. Going to bed earlier can def have a dramatic effect on your sleep.

Do you have other abnormal symptoms throughout the day?

Such as headache, dizziness throughout the day that is causing you to stay in bed?
