View Full Version : A matter of pitch perception

Does anyone out there have this problem. I have a hearing loss in the upper frequencies, also tinnitus. Something has also gone wrong with my sense of pitch in the upper two octaves (for instance) of a piano. The notes I am hearing are completely the wrong pitch to what they actually are in this part of the keyboard. I have investigated this and found that if I block one ear, play a note, block the other ear and play the same note, the left ear hears a note of a different pitch to that perceived by the right one, neither of which is the correct pitch for the note being played.
As a musician it is extremely off-putting to me to be knowing I am playing the correct notes and yet hearing wrong ones in the upper reaches of the keyboard - it's OK lower down from the top two octaves onwards to the bottom end.
This may be more common than is generally appreciated ,as, if I were not involved in music I guess it would be of no particular concern to me, and probably pass unnoticed. So, would any of you, musical or not, with the means to do it, care to carry out the little test I have outlined here and let us all know the results ? Thanks.

I started having this same problem last Thursday after a severe sinus/ear infection. Because I am a professional musician and full time piano teacher, you can imagine my concern. All notes from about middle C and higher have some kind of distortion with F# and C# being the worst. When a pitch is played it either goes sharp or flat by about a half step in my left ear while maintiaing the fundamental pitch. The result is a cacophony of sound resembling an elementary school band. All orchestral music and in particlur strings and clarinets are so distorted and out of tune I cannot bear to listen. Even the ring tone on my cell phone sounds badly out of tune.

I took a 5 day course of the antibiotic zithromax and still had significant congestion in my ears so I went to another doctor and found out today that there is documentation that zithromax can cause distortions in hearing and hearing loss.

A brief exploration on the internet and this site has proven to be helpful. In particular when searching "distortion". I read many posts and one person was helped with changes in diet and sleep, another with Chinese medicine. I have an appointment with an acupuncturist later this week and will check back.

Hello
I just read your post on hearing disturbances. I was wondering if your symptoms improved or disappeared. Last week i was prescribed zythromax and experienced similar things.
Thanks
