View Full Version : too much milk? (breast feeding question)

Is it possible that I'm producing TOO MUCH milk? Sometimes I spray them when feeding (I tandem nurse), and I feel like I'm drowning them, especially DS, who seems to almost choke on it sometimes. They're 7.5 weeks and feeding every 2-3 hours, and when possible I pump in between (usually getting 5-7 ounces total). If I don't pump between feedings, it's even worse. I've got a freezer CHOCK FULL of frozen breastmilk from the past month, which is great, but my concern is that breastfeeding isn't going as smoothly because I have too much milk squirting in their little mouths. Anyone else ever have this problem or have any suggestions?

Thanks, and happy mother's day!

I had this problem with ds when he was little too. It's not technically that you have too much milk, ( but the pumping isn't helping, but I'll get to that) it's probably that you have a strong letdown. I had poor ds always pulling off the breast or choking, I had no idea why......till I realized I could have sprayed the wall 10 feet away one day! Pumping in between isn't probably the best thing for someone with a heavy letdown or someone that produces a lot of milk. You're basically telling your body to produce more and more.........I would suggest only pumping when they have finished nursing, and not in between, until things calm down ( it may take a few weeks or even months) If your supply is that good, then you should still get a few oz. with each pump.
When your letdown is happening.....pull them off, and try to let the heaviest force sray into a diaper, and put them back on. It will get better! I promise......it just takes a while and some patience....At leat you have a problem most breastfeeding mom's would kill for! And great job tandum nursing, I don't know how you do it, high five!;)

Hi Suesy!
You're really lucky to have so much milk! I know it can be a nuasance, but there are many women who have to give up bf due to low supply. Anyway...I didn't have such an abundance, but I did sometimes pump right before I nursed. I'd get maybe 4 or 5 ounces from both breasts combined and then nurse on one or both sides. There was always enough for my dd to get her fill after pumping. This way you'd probably still have loads of milk for the freezer - which is fantastic if you're going back to work or planning to wean or whatever - but I'm thinking that it might help to relieve your strong let down. Just my 2 cents' worth.
Good luck!
