I am 46, male.

-Very few colds/flu, perhaps once in a year
-no infections
-cuts heal normally
-no fatigue (other than that caused by my 2 yr old)
-No unusual thirst, I do drink a lot of water in a day and urinate commensurate with that.
-excercise 5x/wk combination weights/cardio total 40 mins each gym visit
-urinate once occasionally twice per night since I was a child.
-no unusual hunger
-feel fine majority of the time

but....

-40 lbs overweight
-meds for mild hypertension (both parents and brother on meds as well)
-numbness, tingling in toes and parts of feet, but in the areas where it is calloused, no other foot problems.
-my annual bloodwork is "fine" for fasting bs and any other problems (triglyc, cholest etc). I do not know my readings, but this is per my MD of 25 years. If he saw anything he would investigate.
-My Mom had type 2, onset not until after age 70, also my paternal Grandmother...t-2 after age 70. no one else.

My optometrist found 2 small hemorrage spots in my eye on the last exam. This has happened in the past 12 months as my eye exams are yearly. For the first time in 25 plus years my prescription changed, and only very slightly. He referred me to an Opthomologist, indicating it was either a surge in b/p or perhaps pre-diabetes or type 2 undetected that caused the spots. My hypertension does surge occasionally when I am under stress etc.

Given that my MD has never flagged anything in my bloodwork, and (I am told) that fasting bs would certainly show up irregular and lead to further investigation, could it be t-2? I have truly never thought about it, but perhaps you folks could shed some light for me.

Thanks,

Fasting blood sugar is often the last reading to rise with the onset of T2. To see how your blood glucose is responding to food, test it after a carby meal. If you haven't got a meter, you can probably have it done at your doctor's rooms or at a pharmacy.

Mark,
Sorry to jump in here, but if you do have a reaction to carbs which makes your blood sugar spike then do NOT experience the lows..just normal sugar after a few hours..does that mean you have diabetes and not reactive hypoglycemia? Also, does reactive hypoglycemia become diabetes later?

I think they call this relative hypoglycemia- you drop from a fairly high number to a lower one quite quickly, inducing the feeling of a low (relative to where you were) but not actually making you low.
