I finally got back my pyrilinks urine test results. This test measures bone turnover. I took the test once before, while on Fosamax, and my bone loss was low low low. Now I am off Fosamax and taking Strontium Citrate instead. My bone breakdown is still very low - not quite as low as it was on Fosamax, but still very good. I think this shows that Strontium is definitely helping my bones and I'm glad I switched to it. Helen

Thanks for the update. I tried to have a DEXA last week and it turned into a mess. I was told to stay off the strontium for 30 then have it. i'll suggest this test to my dr. if the results from the scan aren't accurate in his opinion. I really have no idea what to expect. Is this test the same as the NTx urine test? take care...phyllis

Phyllis - I think both these tests measure the same thing. I'm sorry for your DEXA mess-up. I don't think the bone breakdown tests are substitutes for DEXAs. They measure your immediate, overnight, rate of bone loss, not the long-range results and over-all condition of your bones that DEXA will show.

Congrats:)

Hi Phyllis: The test that Helen had, tests the same thing in the bone that N-telopeptide (NTx) does. Below is a link that explains the results you want to see in these tests on bone markers. There are 2 types of tests that can be done, and each med gives somewhat different results, so read it and see if it helps to explain.

Strontium *Ranelate* increases bone formation markers (ALP ((bone spec. alkaline phosphatase)), PICP, PINP, OC) and decreases bone resorption markers (NTx, CTx, PYD, DPD). Pyrilinks D's test is a (DPD).

If you decide to have this test, remember it doesn't give you a bone density score, it will, like Helen said, give you an immediate result on markers. Bone markers can tell you if a med is working or not. There is some dispute on the importance of these tests, but they are used in drug trials, and on complex osteo patients, to prove efficacy when bone biopsies can't be done. You would have to be on the Strontium when or if you decide to have it done. These tests are also used to check on other bone disorders, to see if the treatment is working.

You have to register to read the link below, but it's a one time thing and free. The article is on Strontium and Bone Marker tests.

Hi Helen C :

I read your post about the bone turnover test you did, now that you're on the Strontium Citrate, and NOT on Fosamax. I'm a little confused over something, though. You mention that while you were on Fosamax, your bone turnover was very low - and then you mention that the test showed it to be very low on the Strontium, too (even though not quite as low as when you were on Fosamax). So where is the great improvement?:dizzy: Sorry, but if your bone turnover was only very ''slightly'' better than when you were on Fosamax, how does that then equal a ''great'' improvement?

Perhaps a DEXA scan will show things clearer:eek:

Hi HELEN C :

It seems that ''I'' was getting confused between bone ''turnover'' and bone ''breakdown'' in my last post. :

Sorry about that. Hope the Strontium Citrate continues to show good results, which you'll probably see when you do your next Dexa!:blob_fire
