Hi, well my dad is having a quad bypass on monday. I am worried about that, but I am also worreid about his state of mind. I first thought alzheimers or old age, but in the last 2 weeks it has gotten worse. He cannot hold a conversation and says things that don't make sense. Occasionally he will talk normal. He was in a a atrial fib but the cardologist changed his meds and now he is in a normal sinius to bradic rythum. I have read online that atrial fib patients have a higher chance at stroke. I believe that he has suffured a stroke, what do you think? This is coming on too fast for alzheimers in my opinion. Thanks.

p.s. he also refused to be on blood thinnners and just did a asprin theropy everyday prior to this.

I don't know how old your Dad is, but I had a triple Bypass 5 years ago at age 62, and it only took 1 second. At 6-30am Fri morning the nurse said "this injection may make you drowsy" I seemed to blink and open my eyes and said to the nurse what time is it. She said "it's 7-30am Sat morning" I thought to my self "you Bl**dy ripper it's all over. You do feel a bit 2nd hand for a few days but from then on you are an old car with a new engine, and now 5 years later I still say it's the best thing that has happened in my life. I told my family Dr that I would rather go through a Bypass again than before another Knee Replacement. The pain may be worse but the healing sure is quicker.

squirrel,
I think maybe they should postpone that quad-bypass until they can get to the root of what seems to be a new neurological problem.
Tell the doctors you suspect something because he is behaving so differently the last couple weeks. They aren't aware of these canges because to them he's a bed number and check for $$$$$!

You are correct alzheimers is a slow developing brain disorders as is senility. Medication and stress can disorganize one's thoughts and that may be the underlying cause in additon to the aging process. Many older people are very easily stressed and can lose their line of thought.
I'm sure the operation has gone well. Let us know.
