View Full Version : Nausea and vomiting if I don't sleep?

Hi everyone,

I wouldn't say that I have a serious sleep disorder because usually, I'm able to fall sleep, but occasionally I'll have some trouble. However, for as long as I can remember, if I don't sleep well (or at all for that matter) the night before, the next day I will feel drained, nauseous and I'll throw up a lot. It's very strange, and no one else I know does this. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. It's horrible, and it was so bad once that I actually had to call in sick to work ... just because I didn't sleep and I felt like that. I know that there are just some people who need more sleep than others (and I'm one of them), but most people can at least function with little sleep. I've discussed it with my doctor, and she just said that with the given pattern, my body probably just can't hack it, and it sounds fairly normal seeing our bodies need sleep. I don't think it's THAT normal, though.

I'd appreciate any advice/comments/stories.

Thanks in advance :)

Do you have allergies? Is the vomiting first thing after wakeup on these poor sleep nights? Is your throat scratch aand sore on these mornings (before vomiting)? Is your voice hoarse? Does your mouth feel all gummed up with dry mucus? There is method to these questions...

If you have allergies and the poor sleep corresponds to high allergy incident days and nights. You may be experiencing a side effect of excessive nighttime PND (post nasal drip/ mucus drainage down the back of the throat) that loads up your stomach with mucus and when you wake and start moving, you have to get rid of it. If I have too much drainage and not enough on my stomach to cover it.. I vomit. Allergies and waking up after a bad night can cause fluid retention in your ears that can throw of your equilibrium as well. Ear embalances can cause, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting (think car and sea sickness). I have not heard of vomiting as a side effect of any particular sleep disorder.

I am betting there is something that interferes with your sleep patterns and causes the vomiting as a side effect. As an experiment you can try a decongestant/anti-histamine combination during this time and see if it helps. Always consult your physician before taking new medication, but I am fairly certain they will be alright with this trial.

Wish I could have been of more help.

Sincerely,
MG

I am the same!!!

I've never met anyone else who feels as bad as I do on reduced sleep, but maybe you do. I am nauseous, shakey, and jittery when I don't sleep. I can't function.

Doctors don't take me serious either. I read recently that those with serious insomnia (which I have, unfortunately) have excess catecholamines (read: adrenaline) in their bodies. Could be what is wrong with us.

sminerva21, do you have an ADD tendencies?

Thanks for the info, mkgbrook! I actually don't have any allergies or problems with mucas drainage. Other than he occasional cold every now and then, though.

index.html, I don't have any problems with ADD, either. However, what you described is exactly how I feel. I also get very shaky and jittery. It's awful. The only thing to seems to make it go away is getting sleep. Doctor's just tell me that my body can't hack the lack of sleep, and that's how it responds. I don't think there's anything I can do. I just try to recognize when I won't sleep and try to take some sleeping pills.

Good luck with everything! It's good to hear that I'm not the only one!

You're definitely not alone.. I've never heard of anyone else with this problem so it's nice to know that I'm not alone either!

It's very frustrating. All my doctor has said is "I'm writing you a prescription for ... " I have found that if I practice good sleep hygiene and take my meds I'm usually fine for a while. Unfortunately, I'm a second shifter (work nights) so don't get to sleep until between 3:00 and 5:00 AM and this creates a very unnatural sleep pattern for me. I am naturally an early to bed early to rise type. So, I just have to be very disciplined about making sure I prioritize my sleep.

All the best...

I don't know about you, but for me: the less sleep I get, the less I am able to sleep. It's a vicious cycle. If I don't sleep one night, it's going to be harder the next night. Don't sleep that night either - it's even harder. Beyond that, forget it. I am NOT going to sleep without drugs. It just won't happen. Are you that way?

Yes, I also find that the more tired I am the harder it is to relax and get to sleep. I don't have RLS but when I'm over tired, just as I'm sinking into that place where I know I'm dropping off to sleep some part of my body will jerk so hard it wakes me up. This will happen 4 or 5 times before I'm actually able to sleep.

I'm like you in that I cannot function at all unless I've had enough sleep. I don't get jittery as much as I feel extremely weak and almost drunk. My brain is cloudy and everything is in slow motion until I can sneak a nap. If I don't get that nap in, I'll start feeling sick like you described. More often lately my symptoms have been going beyond the sick feeling into problems with neuralgia, migranes, bladder infection and a crushing fatique that will not go away for weeks. I also battle mild but chronic depression so this could have something to do with my sleep issues. Ambien helps from time to time but it's NOT a long term answer for me.

I think the root of my problem, even when very disciplined about my sleep habits and routine, is that I have a hard time STAYING asleep for more than an hour or two so I rarely get to REM stage. Today, for instance, I'm exhausted but I "slept" for a full 8 last night. My husband tells me that I don't sleep, really. I toss and turn, I'm up walking around, itching, tossing covers and then pulling them back up. I'm not aware of any of this... odd. He also says that I started snoring about a year ago.

He's just had a sleep study done and is encouraging me to do the same. I understand that a lot of my troubles could be caused by not getting enough oxygen when I sleep... probably not full blown sleep apnea but some form of obstructive issue that is causing my brain to say "wake up!" Have you had a sleep study done, by any chance?

Anyway, bottom line is I spend most of my waking life battling feelings of exhaustion and waves of nausea that never really go away until I've gotten several contiguous good nights of sleep. And those are very hard to come by.

Keep me posted on how you're doing!

All the best...

Oh boy, can I ever relate to that!

No, I haven't had a sleep study done, but I know I should. While the problems sleeping have been going on a long time, the snoring - like you - has just started in the last year or two.

Yep I am one of those people too. I have to have 7-8 hours or I feel terrible almost like I have a bad hangover! I have been taking Lunesta and it helps alot but I feel like I am dependent on it now. I need to find something more natural. Any sugggestions? I don't really have trouble staying asleep just falling asleep.
