View Full Version : The Vagus Nerve

I'm not sure if I am in the right board.Last year my husband was in the ICU and went into cardiac arrest. They brought him back but he was in a coma. His eyes kept opening and closing. They said that this was the Vagus nerve that caused it.I was told that this meant that there was brain damage due to the lack of oxygen and that he probably wouldn't come out of it.The next day I had him taken off the ventilator and he died.I still have a lot of questions from this that were never answered.I can't seem to let this go without getting some of these answers. Can the vagus nerve cause this and does it mean that the damage was there that they said there was?I can find information on the nerve but I can't find anything that relates it to the eye movements.I will probably never be sure that I did the right thing but maybe if some of these questions are answered then maybe I can let it go.Thanks for any info that I get.

DeeDee...I had stomach surgery for perforated ulcer and they removed about 60% of my stomach, some of the small intestine and severed the Vagus nerve. I really don't know a lot about it, but I did do a little searching and found a website you might be able to gain some insight from. Try going to http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=7631 and see if you can find some answers.

Good luck to you and I am sorry for the loss of your husband.
