Hi, i have pencil thin stools sometimes, and realize that this is a sign of colon cancer. my problem that is confusing me is that I don't have them all the time. some days i will have them and I could go on for long periods of time without having them. I am an anxious person on top of it all, and am wondering if anyone out there knows that if it were to be cancer, would you not have the pencil thin stools all the time as opposed to on and off like i've been having? what else could cause this? any help would be very appreciative! Thanks.

Thin stools also indicate that you are intaking too much insoluble fiber. It moves through your intestines faster.

Dave is right.
You need to in take a water soluble fiber supplement-- like Metamucil, or Citrucel, or Benefiber or Fiber Choice-- any one will bulk up your stool and help to make you regular.

Hi ,
I had back surgery in 2002 and since I have had flat stools everytime I move my bowels, have not had a normal bowel movement since surgery, have had colonoscopys and they just say I have hemoroids, I also had nerve damage from my surgery which I think has something to do with the flat stool. They dont seem concerned about it but it is a big pain for me because it takes me forever to go to the bathroom, its like I still have to go all the time. good luck, dont worry it might be something minor.
good luck
