on a number of occasions (probably ten or so) over the last few years, i've felt the following phemonema:
initially it began as a strong feeling of what i can only describe as a 'current running' through me. it's as if my nerve endings were all getting sensitised at the same time. the first time this happened i was asleep. as the feeling of the current got stronger, i found it more difficult to breathe, until i simply had to stop the current from getting stronger. thankfully i had the ability to do that. that might sound weird. well it felt very weird. i was afraid when i got this feeling first and wondered what the hell it was about.
the next time i had the same nerve ending feeling i was again asleep, though always when i get it, it seems like i'm in the moment and feeling it as it happens. so i'm not really asleep but conscious. again the longer the feeling went on, the stronger it got and the stronger it got the harder is was to breathe. the second time though i was able to control the breathing part a bit better for longer.
after a few more times i was able to completely control the breathing so that i was able to breathe normally while getting this 'sensitising' feeling. i still have no idea what it's about. i got it again last night, again asleep, but became conscious of the feeling during the night. it was very strong last night, stronger than before. it seems like it gets stronger all the time, as much as i'm able to bear. it's very uncomfortable when it happens, though i'm not really frightened of it. i've accepted it as sometimes that happens to me even though i don't fully understand why it's happening.
has anyone else ever had a similar experience? i'd like to hear thoughts from anyone who has had a similar experience.

in the last week i've now had this 'electric current' feeling while awake. it lasted for less than ten seconds but it was very strong for that time. i know now that it's not related to sleeping as i was fully conscious when it came on. i wish there was someone with a similar experience that could shed some light on this.
as an aside i'm rarely sick, have never been in hospital, I exercise well so i'm also very fit (cycle every day to work etc) and I eat well. i never take medication, drink very little alcohol, don't smoke and have never taken drugs. so i'm stumped as to what this is about!

I had a very similar experience almost identical to what you are describing. I think it's a mild seizure. Mine happened after I would take a certain medication but I didn't realize it at first because it was only happening in the morining when I was almost awake but couldn't move, so at first I thought it was some type of sleep disorder.
Stress can bring on seizures too I guess.

I just wanted to add that you are handling this very well because I was very scared when this thing would come on. At times I felt like my body could not take the pressure/pain and felt like I was going to have a stroke or something.

Thanks for the repsonses.
I presume Asha that you were ok when you stopped taking the medication. It's comforting to know in one sense that someone else has experienced this, though not from your point of view! You may well be right about the stress aspect bringing on what I can only imagine is a physiological process.
I've invested a lot of time in a technique known as focusing but I have had little success with it in getting any answers. I'm still trying to remain open to using this method.
I think I'll follow advice though and will get a general health check just to start from a known point.

The movement of energy can cause those exact symptoms. Sometimes it can be a bit uncomfortable, but it's actually a positive occurrance. People who meditate experience this on occassion because meditation can unblock energy that has been obstructed for various reasons. When this positive energy releases, the symptoms described can be the result. You may want to do a search on words such as Kundalini energy, or accupuncture. Kundalini is simply an Eastern word regarding this energy.
This energy flow also occurs sometimes during treatments such as accupuncture, deep tissue massage, Reiki, etc. when a blockage of energy is suddenly released. The whole point of accupuncture is to release or unblock this energy. This is all very well documented over thousands of years. I would look into this before going to a doctor who may end up putting you on meds when actually something very positive may be happening.
By the way, this energy is more prone to moving spontaneously, as described in the above posts, around times of sleep, because the mind is more relaxed and "out of the way".

Very interesting. In terms of releasing energy I've also had other experiences always when asleep.
I had one dream about 8 years ago which I'll never forget. It was an amazing dream that I did not want to leave. I was in a moving car (with my family as it was when I was much younger) and was looking out at what I can only describe as scene awash will colour - a rainbow type effect over a waterfall at the base of a mountain. As I looked out at this I was overwhelmed with a beautiful feeling of euphoria running through me. I had the feeling for a few moments in the dream - it wasn't a fleeting feeling - but I can still remember it drifting away from me and wanting to stay in a state of what I can only describe as bliss (i know that is a subjective term but it's hard to describe an inner feeling in non-subjective terms!). I'll never forget that feeling. This was another dream that felt like I was in the moment. (This feeling of bliss was nothing like the electric current feeling.)
I've also had one instance of an out of body experience when I was young. I'm not sure whether I was alseep at the time but I felt like I drifted upwards out of my body. In the last few years I actually dreamt I was sleeping in that bedroom again and my body drifted upwards, again experiencing the dream as if I was in the moment.
As you can see there's a lot of activity that goes on with me when I'm asleep, maybe as you say when my mind is out of the way!

renaissance,
There is a book you may be interested in. It's called "The Common Experience" by J.M. Cohen and J.F. Phipps (Take note of the authors because there is another book with the same title, but different author). There are many personal accounts in the book, as well as commentary, on moments such as the one you experienced in the dream with the rainbow and waterfall, except these accounts are from when they're awake, such as riding in a car, doing housework, walking about, etc. They use words like bliss, love, euphoria, oneness and connectedness to everything, heightened awareness, timelessness, total peace and contentment, and so on. Meditators also experience this occasionally and people who've had near death experiences. Out of body experiences are talked about also. I know a lot of people who've had those.

Wow!This is so strange.I've had this same feeling for over 35 yrs.I always felt that if i could move or speak it would stop.I even went so far asto ask my hubby to (if he noticed anything strange going on w/me while lying next to him to wake me)..He would tell me what he saw.I would have my eyes part way open & would make strange grunting noises like i was trying to break free of some thing. Then he would shake me or call my name.I would be awake and aware of his touch his voice. Its as if once you move or are moved you break free of some invisable force..Wild .. I always tried to let it just happen and go w/it,but after a few min.or sec.i would come to a place that would scare me w/sounds i can't discribe..I always felt this was some form of astral projection. Some really freaky things have happend as well.I would love to go into more detail but its late, and i've a early appointment...I'll be back soon,Painted:wave:

Curious and curious-er... my take on the sound I hear is that it's the noise of the current. Of course that could be totally wrong.
The other things that have happened to you will be illuminating no doubt. I will not be surprised if there are more similarities.

I had the electric current feeling while sleeping after taking xanex so it makes sense that it's a release of energy but I would never want to experience that again. I'm glad I did not get a stoke because I'm sure it was close :)

asha,
I've never heard of anyone having a stroke because of a release of energy. Accupuncturists would be banned from practicing if people were having strokes during energy releases. Try to stay calm and be glad that the energy is getting unstuck. Take care

I have had this as well. It is usually when I nap in the afternoon, not at night when I sleep. It is like I am half in and half out. Can't move and a current moving throughout. I don't think it happens to me during the deepest of sleep though. That is too weird.

a lot of religious or spiritual overtones in that book ckc. i haven't given any such meaning to my experiences. i think more along the richard feynman lines like 'don't know if it even means anything to think about why we are here, but that doesn't worry me, just take life as it is anyway' to paraphrase succintly! what i do think is that there is a physical or phsychological reason for what is happening. i just haven't got to the bottom of that one yet, but i hope i will...

Hi Renaissance,
Are you still having these? Sorry I am a newbie on here but I was just reading through some posts and I came across this....I have had the same thing...only happened to me a couple of times though..I was having serious sleeping difficulty and nightmares and one night I was woken up by this shock feeling in my body....completely frozen and unable to stop it. My brain could function but my body wa in complete shock! It was insane. I thought that I had just been stunned with some kind of a gun but I just rolled over.
Horrible feeling.
