Hey Scott - I read a post of yours from 2004 on alcohol consumption and you seem to deal with it fine with your inner ear disorder. This Memorial Day weekend kind of stinks because I am afraid to drink any beer so I am going to pass this time, but I don't want to be "beer-free" forever! So I was just wondering if you are still having a bevy now and then and if so, does it still have no negative effects on you?
And also for everyone else, if you can share your stories about alcohol consumption that would be welcome too! Not talking about totally boozing it up - I'm just missing having those few beers during a fun party or event and wanted to know if anyone else has tempted mixing beer/alcohol and inner ear turmoil.

Hi Missy,
It all depends on how rough I feel actually. If there's a bit of junk hanging around or a brief "vestibular thunderstorm" as I like to call them I have a drink. I don't get trashed of course but will usually have a light beer. If I'm really on edge than a light beer shandy. In the end I realised that I could actually handle alcohol much better than I thought I would. So have a light beer and test the water that way first. At the moment though, I'm such a wreck with symptoms that I wouldn't touch any booze at all. Anything I do at the moment pushes the buttons and I pay a heavy price.
Note: if you have any migraine component to this, avoid red wine. Some migraineurs would likely tell you to avoid alcohol completely if you had MAV.
Good luck...Scott

Hi Missy - I'm similar to Scott in that it depends on how I've been feeling as to whether or not I have a drink. If I've been feeling off for a few days, I don't risk it. When I do have a drink, I actually find I feel much better after a glass of wine and feel almost "normal". I've had one or two instances where I felt bad after drinking a beer ... don't know if it was a coincidence or not, so I've stayed away from beer just in case.

Hi Missy! I went a long time with my inner ear problem not drinking just out of sure fright of what it might do to me. I starting having a couple of drinks at social outings just so I could relax my nerves and calm my symptoms a little bit. I really helped me be able to get through going out a lot easier and sure beat sitting at home.

I have a drink a few times a week, normally vodka and caffine free diet cola, no effects whatsoever, also when I go out with friends I will have a small glass of white wine, it seems to make no difference at all to my dizzy state or any other symptoms, sometimes I feel better for it especially when a bit tense or stressed as it relaxes me.

Excellent information folks, thanks! I was SOOO wanting a beer (or two, or...) last night just because it is a holiday weekend and I'm getting tired of being so woosy about it. But I definitely am a scaredy cat when dealing with this inner ear turmoil so I wimped out and passed.
I only drink light beer, and I am used to coming home after work and sitting at the computer and having a few. Remember those good ol' days? :(
It helps to know that it hasn't killed some of you, so I MAY try some next weekend, depending on how I feel. For the past 5 days I have been around 85% - 90% so it's really really tempting. But it's just too darn scary.
I'm actually glad I didn't have any last night because this morning I woke up with a headache and what felt like a hangover (without the alcohol). I was thankful I hadn't indulged.

It took me a long time before I felt comfortable drinking again. I can drink a couple beers and be fine. But I tend to test the waters with one beer and see how I feel. If I feel like it isn't bothering my inner ears, then I will drink a little more. BUT it is not a routine thing. Only every once in a while, and I don't get really drunk. But it is nice to know I can still go out and enjoy a few drinks with friends. It really depends on how "good" you are feeling. If you aren't feeling well I wouldn't drink. But if you are feeling strong, one beer or a glass of wine probably won't hurt.
