OMG 7 years old? When I was around 7 I was told (about 25 years ago) that I would need surgery as an adult but they never suggested it at that age for me. THey just tried to adjust with orthodics and therapy. obviously didnt work for me and I am in extreme pain and my surgery is scheduled for july 23.
sorry I have no advice for you, I am curious to read if anyone else has heard of this.

hi..yes she is young but the moulds and splits did not work at all..it has actually become worse the last two years to the extent of her not being able to wear shoes. Is in constant pain.Hearing u say you now need it done actually reasures me that this is for the best now as we do not want her to suffer any longer! I really am struggling to find others who have had it done so young or thier children having it done so young. Will keep you posted see..let us know how you cope!! good luck

Wow! That is SO young! I have had bad bunion I was at least 9. I remember tracing my foot at the age and it being there... I still have the tracing, actually. Anyway, they've been horrible and often painful for at least 23 years. Still, I've never had any doctor who would have recommended getting it done so young. A main concern shsould be that bunions can and do grow back. I would think since her foot still has a lot of growing to do, that would open the door further to the chances of the bunion(s) growing back.

hello.thanks for that.I must actually remeber to keep her original plaster moulds for her.they did explain a year ago that they are reluctant to do it before she is 12.they only do the op in circumstances that really warrant it.the degree of deformity is severe9app 20deg out)...normally seen in a person over the age of 60.Her big toes are already crossing over the second and facing out.she is not using her big toe at all so has developed arthritis in all the other toes. She also gets itchy from the toes crossing. The OS says they are alot more aggressive with her age as the chance of it raccurring is 40%.For that reason they will be using extra screws abd pins and she will have to be off her feet alot longer than an adult.I will let you know how the op goes see.

My Big toes overlap my second toes too. Cant remember the exact angle my surgeon said (i can find out) but he seemed pretty shocked. I had pins put in at 10 years old to straighten them out And while he was there he removed my bunions. I now have lovely scars 7cm long on the side of each foot. sadly it did not work and i have bunions once more and the angle of the overlapping increased :( i now have useless pins in my foot  he is contemplating redoing it in the future but atm im waiting for an ankle arthroscopy which is next month so thats a priority. i was only three years older than your daughter when i had my bunions/pins done and was in a wheelchair for a while... strangely i did not get bored my friends were brilliant. Ive just staRted knitting which is great because its fun and something you can do whilst in hospital or bedrest or whatever... im making a blanket atm for oxfam :D when i was 10 i kept myself entertained by watching videos, tv, going shopping in my wheelchair with my mum, drawing, knitting, sewing things, cross stitch, colouring in, reading books/magazines, listening to music... even cooking if mum put a tray on my knee to lean on... im sure theres lots you could do to keep her busy. you probs wont be able to do much in the way of exercise with her you need to see a physio about that... but make sure she moves her legs every so often to prevent a blood clot forming. i hope all goes well tomorrow with your daughter.

Hope all is still well with your daughter. I was actually recommended for surgery at 8 years old. My bunions were severe to the point where I couldn't find any shoes to fit my feet, but were no where near the pain that your daughter was experiencing. I had the surgery booked, but backed out because we choose to wait til my feet stopped growing. I again had it booked at 12 years old, but cancelled again because what 12 year old wants to be bound up with 2 casts? Through my teen years I wouldn't dare go through with it. So now I'm 24 years old, and I finally went through with the surgery and have decent looking feet. I still have bunions because my angles were so severe, but no more pain. I think you have made the right decision to get it done because being a teenager with painful bunions is not fun. I could never wear sandals in the summer time because of the embarrassment. And quite honestly, I would do the surgery again if I had to! The best thing I ever did for myself.

thank you Rbstarrr.Yes..having elective surg done on a 7yr old..and on both feet, had a few people not being too happy with us.We gave her an opinion before the time and clearly laid out the pros and cons.her great gran also has very bad bunions and my DD did not want to be the same. She is now a few weeks post op and is doing very well.No more pain so no meds taken.A little swelling when too active..crawling around or not elevating. She is having a great time at school and the other children and her teacher have been great.our schools close today for two weeks.I am leaving my husband behind, taking my 3(3,7 and 15 yrs) kids to visit my family...5 hours away!!!We live in Cape Town ..we going to Knysna. My DD is excited to have family write on her casts. On July 18 pins and casts will be removed.Hope all keeps going so well for you!!Ursula.

hello like wow..and all..My Dd is doing well.her casts and pins were removed yesterday.the wound looks good and she does not have too much swelling. We hoped she would be able to start walking..but hit a snag. When cast came off..we realized she has sores on both heals..bleeding alot..so now is still off her feet and thickly bandaged. Her dr says he wants to see her in 1 week to see if heels have healed. At least the bunionectomy/osteotomy wound looks good. She is not in too much pain and has coped very very well. How u all doing??

Glad your daughter is on the mend! Hopefully it wont be long before she can start walking again! Ive been there, its not great, but when its all healed she will feel so much better. The scars also should heal good, mine are barely visible seven years later. Do keep us informed :)
I've had my stitches out from my arthroscopy and my foot is healing ok, they found two foreign bodies, and Ive been told to start gentle exercise, am walking and building up to harder exercise such as cycling and the gym. Im hoping to horseride eventually. It was extremely painful but the pain has almost totally gone now Im walking but its extremely bruised where the surgeons have been digging around in there. Am feeling like I can finally get on with my life but have been told that if iot gets painful again I will need ankle fusion.
