View Full Version : Have IDD and migrating to USA - how to get medicine/health cover?

Hello everyone,

I am an insulin dependent diabetic and I am shortly to migrate to the USA from the UK. I'm heading for North Carolina.

Slap my hands for not checking on this before, but I've only just discovered that private individual health insurance will not cover me for pre-existing conditions, although if I get a good job and have a good employer who doesn't impose a wait period before giving cover, I could be OK.

However, I can't base my plans on maybe's and if's and so I need to find a real solution soon after arriving there. I will have a couple of month’s supplies with me, including Metformin and needles/test strips/lancets. I use Lantus Optiset pens which are available over there, according to the manufacturer.

I have spent the past week or so, wading through many web sites, forums and emails seeking help on this and what I have found is a labyrinth of possible options, depending on qualifying factors, but which are then clouded by various rules, conditions, wait periods and the like. I am exhausted.:dizzy:

I would like to hear about anyone who has migrated to the USA and found an answer to this problem or at least has gone through the hurdles and hoops of the USA healthcare system and can offer me advice or recommendations.

I may end up having to buy my medicine myself so any tips on where to go to get this would also be useful.
