Ok everyone so heres my situation, I'm 27 yrs old...im looking for advice and your experiences....
So for the past month and 1/2 i have had major insomnia. It first started where i only slept 4 hrs a couple nights, then i was worried about it and missed a whole nights sleep, then my anxiety grew worse about not sleeping and since then has become worse. So my doctor gave me ambien which i tried a couple nights and did not like it cuz it made me feel strange and only kept me asleep for 3-5 hrs. Then i tried some xanax at night which worked for 2 weeks then started not to, So i was on that for about 3 1/2 to 4 weeks then tapered off and started taking lunesta and trazodone for about 7-8 days, which only kept me asleep a couple hrs, if that. Trazodone alone, did not work, only worked combined with lunesta. Anyways, i decided i wanted to be drug free since these meds werent really working and put me in a fog all day. So i went off them and the past few days have been getting no sleep. I went 2 days with zero sleep, on the 3rd night i fell asleep with no meds, off and on for 8 hrs, woke up about 3 or 4 times. Then the next night zero sleep again. Then last night i took 1/2 xanax and got some zzz's. Its like my body is soooo tired but my mind will not shut off and let me sleep, as soon as my thoughts start to drift, it zaps me back awake. Its so fustrating. Does anyone have this problem, and if i stay off the drugs will my sleep return to normal or has my body already become dependant on all these drugs to sleep. I miss that tired feeling that you get right before you sleep. I havent had that lately. I just want to be back to normal. Not sleeping has made me depressed, but i do not want to go on any anti-depressants, since i have read the horror stories and plus i was not depressed before the not sleeping. I have tried all the natural stuff to help sleep (exersice, camomile, melatonin, hot bath, relaxation, meditation, etc) Next stop i am going to a sleep specialist and hypnotherapist. I just want my normal life back where i could sleep 7 hrs no problem. Its like i have become afraid of my bed and sleeping. No tramadic events have happened to make me like this. When this first started i think i was drinking too much wine at night, which woke me up after a few hrs (i have stopped all alcohol and caffine use) plus my bf, works nights and was waking me up at 4 am for a few nights in a row which started me on this schedule.
Just wondering if anyone was successful in achieving a normal nights sleep again after stopping all meds after a month or so? Any advice would be appreciated... thanks in advance.

This is exactly the problem I have been experiencing! I am 23 and it started about 2 months ago. I didn't have a traumatic event either just one night I couldn't fall asleep and then the next night it got worse. Then I would get more and more anxious about sleeping. Finally I had to go to my doctor and she gave me a prescription for the 3mg Lunesta. I have slept great every night now. But I know I am starting to get dependent on them! I used to drink wine at night too so I have cut out all alcohol to see if it helps me. It has but this weekend I really wanted some wine but I couldn't! It wasn't very fun. I exercise 5 days a week too. But when I lay down to go to sleep my mind just races and won't let me relax. My doctor also thinks I have anxiety issues so she prescribed me Cymbalta but I haven't started it and don't want to. I wasn't depressed before all this either. Keep in touch!

ya, it really sucks, its like over a month ago i didnt even think about sleeping really, i just was tired and fell asleep to tv and then went to bed and was fine, now i can't stop thinking about it. So lunesta is working for you? I tried the 2mg and it only kept me asleep for 3 or 4 hrs. Maybe i should try the 3mg, i just hate to be dependant on them cuz its so hard to get off. Plus they interfere with your sleep cycles. Ya my doctor wanted to give me lexapro but i said no since i wasnt depressed before so i dont think it makes much sense, its not gonna help me sleep... infact i saw one of the top side effects of those drugs is insomnia. I feel the doctors don't really listen sometimes they just throw drugs at you without figuring out why... anyways let me know how your doing w/the lunesta, etc.

Yeah as soon as I mentioned not being able to sleep my doctor wanted to prescribe Cymbalta! I don't want to take an anti-depressant I am not depressed! I finally got the Lunesta though. And one of the side effects of Cymbalta is insomnia. I can't handle any more of that! That's exactly how I was I never even thought about sleeping it was just something I did. What I think is that less sleep builds on itself and then you get a really bad problem to where you can't sleep at all. And all you do is think about sleeping. Because now that the Lunesta is helping me I don't even worry about it anymore. I think you should try the 3mg for a month just so you can catch up on your sleep. I think then you will feel better.

Wow, I read your posts and it all sounds so familiar. I am 32 year old male and years ago in college, (even when there was no stress in my life)everything that both you girls describe happened to me. It never stopped. I guess I've just fought with it over the years and and did my best to cope with it. I was recently in the hospital and asked the doc to help me sleep, because I am naturally a light sleeper and there was so much noise and light etc... So he gave me a prescription for ambien (30 pills). I got out of the hospital but continued using the ambien. I haven't slept like this for years. It's only been 2 weeks but I feel like I am hooked on them. I guess I have a lot of stress in my life now but I work out a lot to help cope with it. I found that for a while, that helped me sleep. But now the minute my head hits the pillow, my mind starts racing (I've been like this for years now). I get so mad that I can't sleep, and my madness keeps me awake. I suppose I'm getting anxiety over not being able to sleep which is driving me crazy and not helping the situation. I am not depressed either. I have never been depressed. I feel tired during the day and then when I go to bed, I am never more awake. Do you guys have stress in your life? Can I ask you what you do for a living? Can I also ask if you are physically active (like working out or have a physical job)? This is a renewed problem in my life because I've slept like a baby for the last 2 weeks and now and I'm so tired but I can't sleep. Since your problem sounds identical to mine, I am curious if we also have that in common.

ya, i am a graphic designer, i usually work out 5-6 times a week, a little less now with all my problems. but working out used to make me real tired. Now all i can think about all day is not sleeping, its horrible, its like im obsessed, i used to not even think of it at all a month 1/2 ago. It's crazy to think you've gone on like this for years. I hope i can resolve my sleeping issues very soon cuz i dont know how you can go on without sleeping. I used to get 7 hrs no prob. but now its in my head and i can't get arround it for some reason. I start stressing as soon as it becomes close to bed time. I'm wondering if all the drugs they gave me (xanax, lunesta, trazadone) screwed my body up and now it just wont get tired. I wish i would of resorted to some natural remedies before i turned to these drugs, but oh well, what can u do. The few days i actually get to sleep naturally with no drugs (which is rare) i wake up every couple hrs. I know my body is tired so why won't it just stay asleep... it is crazy.ugg. I'm seeing a sleep specialist in 2 weeks. I'll let u know how it goes... then on to a cognative behavioral therapist most likely. good luck to you guys and keep me posted..:) :) :)

I also wonder if the drugs screwed me up. I know sleep aids are supposed to be addictive, but what if your sleep cycle gets used to them and now NEEDS the drug to get to sleep? I also start stressing when it becomes time for bed. I had a sleep study done a few months back but it failed because I never fell asleep (so I wonder what the point was). Stupid doctors just want your money. Good luck with your therapy and sleep specialist. Please write back and tell us what they say.

Yes I am very physically active. I also work out 5-6 days a week. My problems all started when I quit taking Zyrtec for my allergies. You are supposed to take it at bedtime because they make you really drowsy. Well I thought I didn't need them anymore so I quit taking them. That is when the insomnia started and went on for about a month. Finally I got some Lunesta from my doctor. I really like them but I like to have a glass of wine or two every once in a while and it says DO NOT drink alcohol with it. So I have had to cut that out totally. I think my situation is improving though. I have found that when I lay down and my mind starts racing I just yell STOP! (well in my head) and then the thoughts stop and I just keep doing this till I fall asleep. I found this suggestion on the Ambien website actually. I just don't know what I will do when I run out of Lunesta but I'll keep you updated!

ya, im gonna try some melatonin and give it a week or two chance, i may have some sleepless nights ahead, but its worth a try i guess. It does make me sleepy but so far have not fallen asleep from it. I'm pretty sure lunesta and ambien block some of your natural sleep cycles which is why i dont want to take it ( i think it blocks stage 5 sleep) anyways, im gonna try this out tonight and over the weekend and see how it goes! hopefullly i can get some natural sleep... we will see thou.

Aw that sucks! You had me excited about the sleepblend. As a matter of fact, I didn't sleep at all last night, so I got up this morning and was headed out the door to go find some sleepblend when I read this post of yours. Ya, it's working on and off, some nights better than others, i talked to one person who uses it and said it took them a little over a week before they were on a steady schedule, so im giving a few more days. Will your doctor give you another perscription for lunesta, a lower dosage? cuz you may want to go down to the 1 or 2 mg for a week or so, i heard thats how people wean themselves off lunesta. Or just cold turkey it, but that may mean a day or two of no sleep (which is misery, i went thru it) but maybe if you subsitute the melatonin it wont be so bad. I wish you luck. I didnt get much sleep last night, only a few hrs so im kinda bummed but im hoping tonight will be better. keep me posted & good luck.

Did you take the Ambien and the sleepblend together? I would think that might be dangerous. How have you been sleeping now? No I am still taking the lunesta but I am gonna stop taking it on Monday. We'll see how it goes! I'm sure it's gonna be hard to sleep but I think I can get through it! :)

If all you guys can get a hold of the anti nausea pill GRAVOL and take it about an hour before you go to bed, you will find you get a good sleep.
My DR actually recommended it for me.
It is readily available here in Canada at any drug store. The generic brand is really cheap. At the place I buy it , it is $2.99 for 100.
Try taking 1 to start and then if that does not do it for you, you can take up to 2. That will do it,but you might feel tired still in the morning.
Good Luck.

Some people have mentioned that they have busy minds while trying to drift off to sleep. Do you watch unpleasant TV before heading to bed? The news by any chance? This is definitely interfere with trying to get a sound sleep and could be one of the many factors that cause problems for you.
Read an uplifting/empowering book for 10 mins and try listening to a relaxing /meditative CD also - works wonders for me.
There are plenty of great programs out there that help to get your brain waves to replicate sleep patterns at a much fast rate. Def worth trying.

No I haven't yet. I went to the store and bought a bottle of 3mg melatonin though. I'm gonna try that tonight. I just really hope it works I have heard great things about it. If I don't fall asleep I will probably have to take a Lunesta too a few hours later. Do you think that would be safe? I hope you get some rest! Ok angels I took the melatonin last night! Well I can't say that it worked as good as a Lunesta but it did have a sedating effect. It still took me about an hour to get to sleep though. I woke up alot during the night too. But it could be due to some rebound insomnia from stopping the Lunesta. I'm just gonna stick with it though for a few more nights. How are things going for you?

Well I slept great last night finally! The melatonin is a godsend for me! I think it just took a few nights to work because I was coming off the lunesta. I'm sorry that things aren't going as well for you. I will be praying for you though! How many mgs are you taking of the melatonin? I am taking the 3mg capsules. Well the melatonin is still working like a charm for me. I have been sleeping really great. I even opened the capsule and reduced the dose some. I was feeling too groggy before but now I feel great. It took about 3 nights for it to start working though. I hope you start to have better luck with it.

This is happening to me too. I was up for 72 hours straight due to fear of not being able to fall asleep. I finally fell asleep while taking remeron and klonopin together... but I only slept 3 hours. I am like a zombie right now. I can't get my mind to stop thinking of not being able to fall asleep and the thought gets me into a panic. I fear of death from sleep deprivation. No matter how exhausted I am, it's like I lost the ability to fall asleep. I'm scared. My doc just put me on lexapro hoping over time, it will help me.

Hi terry sorry to hear you are having so much trouble sleeping. I know how it feels when you just think about not being able to sleep all day long! It's miserable. But you have to stop thinking that way or you won't sleep and the cycle continues. Start replacing those "I can't sleep" thoughts with positive ones. It will be really hard at first but you have to do it. I just started thinking " I am a normal, healthy adult and I will fall asleep and everything will be fine." The lexapro could have alot to do with your insomnia. How long have you been taking it now? It can cause alot of anxiety at first before it starts to help. Hope you feel better soon!

I am only on day 2 of the lexapro.. I was having insomnia before that... even while on klonopin. Yeah, it's like I obsess over not being able to fall asleep and get panicy about it. Because I know how miserable I am the next day with no sleep. My schedule is that I HAVE to be up by 5am the latest. I have two young kids. So, as the time goes closer and closer into the morning and I'm still awake, I panic even more, knowing, my time for sleep is up.

Insomnia is one of the tell-tale signs of depression. After not sleeping well for several months my doctor mentioned that possibility. While I didn't think i was depressed I was willing to try anything at that point. As it turns out after looking back with a clear mind I realized I was pretty depressed. I think thats the dangerous thing about depression is that it creeps in so slowly you may not realize it's happening. Anyway, after being on anti-depressants for a couple of weeks my sleep went back to normal. I sleep like a baby now and have no problem staying on the anti-depressants for the time being. You have to stick with the AD's for a while though b/c until your body adjusts to being on them insomnia is actually one of the side effects. I felt completely back to normal within 5-6 weeks.
