View Full Version : Insulin Resistant?

I went to my gyn about two weeks ago with several complaints. They ran some tests and said my androgens were not abnormal and ruled out PCOS, which is what they had initially suspected. However, they did run a 2 hour GTT. When the doctor called me back with the results of the GTT, she said that I was insulin resistant. However, these test results appear normal to me, except for one that she said they goofed up on. I seem to fit the symptoms of insulin resistance, but the tests look off and my parents are doubting the diagnosis... and thus not being helpful. Can anyone decipher these for me?

Test Result Limits
Glucose, Plasma 88mg/dL 65-99
Glucose, 2hr Postprandial 103mg/dL 65-139
*Insulin, Fasting 103.0H uIU/mL 0.0-29.1
Insulin, 2 hr 52.9 uIU/mL 0.0-145.4

The starred one is the one she said was erroneous. She divided 103 by 52.9 and came up with 1.947. She said anything less than 4.5 indicated insulin resistance.

Confused!!!

I'm a diabetic and I don't even understand all of that. ;) If you will go to the Joslin site they have a chat room with the smartest people about diabetes that I have ever found any where.

Your blood glucose is normal, both fasting and post-prandial. But your insulin levels are high. The fasting insulin level in a healthy young person would be less than 10, and yours is 103. It means that your beta cells are having to produce excessive amounts of insulin to keep your blood glucose down. This is neccessary because your body is not using insulin efficiently. In other words, your are insulin resistant.

Cheers,

Mark
