Hi,

Does anyone know of warts (some form of hpv) growing under the skin of the gums? I seem to have had them on mine, and they might be causing the gums to recede now that the hpv is subsiding. Saw a dentist about it, but she didn't seem to know much about how hpv can affect the gums, and whether or not it can cause them to recede.

I have been told that my bone has receded by 1mm from an xray. The dentist didn't seem worried about it, saying it was only the start, not serious. And it was that more likely that had caused my gums to recede over the last 12 months than anything else. 1mm of bone shrinkage seems a lot for that period of time.

I think the receding is more likely to be due to hpv, but it's effects on the mouth there doesn't seem to be much info about and maybe dentists don't know much about it either.

There's 100 different types of HPV and they tend to inhabit different areas of the body. Usually on the hands from what I've seen, but many also can inhabit the oral cavity, although this area less commonly so it would seem.

This is a pic I found on the net of someone who appears to have a serious oral HPV problem:

[removed]

Though the dentist has no idea about it, it seems to me that once the immune system has removed HPV growths on the lining of the gum (where it meets the teeth) it could leave some damage causing them to recede, especially if the growths are scratched with a fingernail.
