Okay, here is a question.... Can taking SSRI meds cause Bipolar? I have always had my mood swings, but lately the pendulum is swinging pretty wide. I know that if you already have established bipolar, SSRIs are a big no-no, but what are the chances that long-term SSRI use will cause bipolar tendencies? So many factors play in when dealing with PTSD, that sometimes it's hard to peel back the layers to expose the root of the mood swings. I've talked pretty extensively to my psychiatrist about the possiblity of bipolar, and he doesn't think that is my issue. But, as the mood swings get worse - the highs get higher and the lows get lower, I can't help but wonder....
Any ideas?

Hi Beka,
You know, I have wondered that for years. My mood swings (if that's what they could be called; I had manic painting episodes wherein I didn't sleep for more than a couple of hours at a time for weeks/then weeks when I just couldn't get up to do anything, not even rinse a coffee cup) only became crazily noticeable when I was on Prozac and then Wellbutrin. I did get some of my best artwork done then, but I never wanted to be a Jackson Pollack.
This is all anecdotal, but I'd be interested to see others' ideas on it, because I always held that the Prozac caused it.

The way we found out I was bipolar was being on Prozac for 6 months... I do have a family history of it and was known for my mania as a teenager so I don't think in my case it was from the Prozac but when I was hospitalized there where 3 girls who went maniac from SSRI's... It was understood that once you get maniac you will always have that tendency...

Hmmm, this is really interesting - I'm on Prozac right now. This doesn't sound good!

I did take Trazadone for sleep anywhere from 25mgs-300mgs a night. Dee how much do you take of Traz??????
I now take Cymbalta. Only one that I can take.....

All of my meds have that side effect... I don't get it??? I know it's crucial for me to be on meds but I HATE them right now OR I need to learn how to deal with issues on them since I feel this is the first time I've been out of control while on them??? This is all just making me sick, my thoughts won't stop!

Dee-nah....I really feel you need to discuss this with your Dr. If it is indeed the meds causing you to feel like this, it's not fair. No fairer than anything else you have been through , but correctable.

I am, trust me!! The thought of going on a new meds scares me (and please I know that sounds like an excuse and you may be feeling you can't win with me about this BUT meds really make you so ill in the beginning.. Not something to look forward too).. I would do anything though so as scary as it might be this is worse!

No Dee-nah....i don't feel you are making excuses. I ahve over the years been put on almost every AD known to the world. All had horrible side effect. I would suffer more for a few weeks and then call the Dr. and tell him I couldn't take it anymore. SSRI's cause me extreme agitation, insomnia. Now why would an anxious person want to take something that makes them more anxious? I have taken some that I thought I wsa jumping out of my skin. I had to cahnge PCP's from one I saw all my life, to another who didn't care about anything and finally found the one I see now 5 years ago. He picked up right away that I was med sensitive. he saw this with even my BP meds lets alone mind altering drugs so I stick to the klonopin because that's the only one that helps. I feel for you, I really do. I remember taking lexapro and Wellbutrin. They were my worst ones. I felt like I had bugs crawling on me constantly. Couldn't stop, couldn't sleep. Felt like I was losing my mind. Please know that I am wishing you the best. Maybe at this point they all need to be changed, including the xanax to another benzo. If you've been taking it that long it will stop working after awhile.
