I had blood tests as part of a routine checkup this week and my fasting glucose level was 5.7 mmol. The doctor said they start to be concerned at 6.0 mmol, althought I've read other places that it's really 7.0 mmol. I am female, 49, 5'7" and 154 pounds, although when I gain weight it's always around the mid section. My cholesterol levels are fine. I don't exercise enough, which I plan to change immediately, and I could stand to lose 10 lbs. An uncle and my grandmother had diabetes, which was late-life onset. My question is, to all of you who probably know more than my GP, is 5.7 mmol a wake up call, and should I be concerned? I know that if I start to exercise and lose a little weight I probably won't get diabetes. Thanks in advance. :)

It is the equivalent of 102.6. So you are at the very edge. It could be a slight error and you are ok, but basically you should take it as a warning call. It should be 100 or less (less than 5.56).

Basically, they say that fasting should be under 100. Anything between 100 and 125 is pre-diabetic, and 126 and over is diabetic. I know that the American numbers typically are a bit more stringent. But fasting should still be below 6 mmol.

I was just recently diagnosed as being pre-diabetic myself. My fasting glucose was 118. I actually have a follow up appt with my new endo nurse practioner on the 7th to go over these results as well as other issues I am having.
