View Full Version : Am I a diabetic?

Yesterday a fasting glucose test with a measuring gadget showed the reading as 123. A few hours later, the post-parandial reading taken with the same gadget 1 hour and 45 minutes after I had finished breakfast was 133. The doctor recommended HbA1c. The result shows a value of 5.75 and gives a reference range that shows below 6.0% as normal value. It also shows my average blood glucose calculated as 105.47 and shows in the reference range a value range of 90-120 mg/dl as excellent control.

Can an expert tell me what these readings indicate? Am I a non-diabetic or diabetic or a borderline case?

I am 53. My father was diagnosed for diabetes around the same age that I am now. My mother, who died at 72, had normal sugar till her end.

I am not an expert but it sounds like your tester is off and the HbA1c is certainly OK.
This result is probably the most accurate.

I would suggest you get a different tester.

I would suggest you go to the doctor. Untreated Diabetes is nothing to play with. Go see a doctor ... better safe than sorry.:)

I am not an expert but I would say your fasting blood glucose would suggest a prediabetes condition. Although the guidelines change every so often, the last I knew, the American Diabetes Assoc. considers a fasting over 110, as a possible for prediabetes.

I can't remember exactly the guidelines for nonfasting, but your nonfasting does not seem terribly high, in my opinion.

I believe for AIC, for diabetics, "ideal control" is under 6.0.

Hope this helps.
