I spoke to my obgyn nurse and she told me to take a prenatal vitamin and a calcium supplement while I am ttc. I don't know which calcium supplement to take. For example some have vitamin d or magnesium or both. Any ideas?

Hi,
I don't take a calcium supplement myself, only pre-natals. But, I do know when you're taking calcium, you need the one with magnesium too in order for your body to utilize the calcium. Do you have problems getting enough calcium from milk etc? I don't drink milk at all, but I do eat yogurt and cheese.

swig, I was also told to take calcium, but he said I could get it in milk and other dairy pructs... I don't feel guilty having a milkshake now!!! But I know the reason for my increased calcium was due to making up for lost time while I was on depo

definitely take a supplement that has a 2 to 1 ratio of calcium and magnesium. most people are deficient in magnesium but it's necessary for lots of functions! if you take magnesium on it's own it can actually leech calcium from your bones but if you take them together the magnesium helps your body absord the calcium. my prenatal pack has the vitamin and then separate calcium and magnesium pills.

My OBGYN told me to get 1000-1500 mg of calcium a day, which he said was about six servings of dairy in my diet. Well, I don't eat that much dairy! Six servings seemed like a lot to me, so he told me to take supplements. He suggested Tums--they have 250 mg per chewable tablet. Vitamin D and magnesium are important for your body to utilize the calcium, but I already have them in my prenatal. I don't know how much is too much though--if you are getting them in your prenatal and your calcium supplement, would you be getting too much?
