View Full Version : This doesn't make sense... higher than normal fasting blood glucose

Hi everyone. I'm 21 years old, 5'11 and weigh 155 pounds. I consider myself in semigood shape. I am not obese or even utmost overweight. I exercise every now and then. Last week I had the usual blood test/work that I get every few years just to make sure everything is okay. And to my surprise, there were 2 things that were strange.

One was my cholesterol was lowest it's ever been. 112 Total cholesterol with 35 HDL. HDL and total cholesterol is low, but my doctor told me not to worry about it. Usually my cholesterol was around 150 to 180 range.

Next I checked my glucose and my fasting blood sugar read a level of "119." Now that got me worried as I thought I was prediabetic or something. Last 2 or 3 years ago, my reading levels were in the 60 to 80 range which was considered normal. I have no idea how it jumped that high.

The doctor said it could be a mistake/lab error, so I will go back again this Friday to take another blood work. It seems like this would be a lab mistake because it doesn't correlate. How can someone like me, healthy, young, non overweight have this high blood sugar? It was fine just a few years ago!

Now my questions are as follows:

1). I'm currently taking 20mg omeprazole for some slight acid reflux for the past week. Could this HAVE raised my blood sugar slightly?

2). All my other tests came out fine: kidney, liver, complete blood count (CBC), thyroid, etc.... it doesn't correlate. Even blood pressure is fine. Low cholesterol (I'll accept this) + high blood sugar is..... strange? It definately ain't my diet then. I definately fasted and drank/ate nothing for like 14+ hours. I also don't feel like extreme fatigue or notice increased urination/thirst associated with "prediabetes or even type 2 diabetes"...

3) I eat lots of fruits, vegetables, get enough fiber intake. I don't smoke or drink alcohol. Any opinions on what this could be? Hopefully it's just an error as it doesn't make sense.

Thanks!

Yes, the fasting blood sugar can jump that fast.

If you ate grapes or grape juice one or two days before the test, this could account for the higher fasting BS. My daughter and husband had high fasting readings after consuming grapes and/or grape juice. Neither are diabetic or pre-diabetic.

If you ate a late dinner the day before containing high carbs/fats, this could have an effect.

Hmm... I consumed a lot of broccoli the day before. And that was more than 15+ hours ago that I fasted. No juice or anything that I can remember. Strange.

Brocolli contains virtually no carbohydrate, so that would not have made a difference. Food/drinks consumed 15+ hours before a test wouldn't affect the result for a non-diabetic person. Even a heavy glucose load will only cause a spike in blood sugar, with the level returning to normal in a couple of hours.

A fasting blood glucose of 119 definitely suggests that you are pre-diabetic. A second test would verify that.

Exactly. I don't know how it jumped. I'm hoping that this an error. Afterall, given my status and age and everything; it just doesn't add up. Just 2-3 years ago, my levels were normal (60-80 range if I remember correctly).

You are assuming that the sole cause for diabetes (and I assume that you are assuming type 2) is being overweight. That is just not true. In some cases people who are very fit and at a normal weight can get T2. Also, you can get T1 (an autoimmune disorder) at any age.

While it is possible that the number is a lab error, your being young and at a normal weight does not preclude diabetes. Let us know how the second round of labs goes.

I was 33, extremely fit and 9 months before my diagnosis my fasting bg was 70 at my doctor appointment. 9 months later it jumped to 250. So, it doesn't matter what your values were a couple of years ago. Repeat the test to confirm (labs do make errors) and try not to worry.

Well, I think the hospital made a mistake on the last one or maybe something else. Today I retook the fasting blood glucose test. My value was 87. Thank goodness! I knew it shouldn't be that high. My doctor also gave me the Hba1c results and it was a value of 5.3, which I think correlates with my 87 bs. Guess I'm okay? hehe...
