Hello. I am a male currently planning to attend college to become a surgical tech. One question though: do employers commonly discriminate against males with long hair? It is neat, and combed; easily tucked away before procedure ensues. Your answers are GREATLY appreciated.

Yes. Though it isnt fair, there is a double standard regarding long hair in some professions, and health care is definately one of them. Particularly in the South and Midwest. If you were in NYC or LA, it might be different, but where I live (KY), I have NEVER seen any man working at the hosptials or Drs. offices with long hair. (This includes ALOT of Drs offices in KY, TN, and IN as well as several hospitals in KY, and TN). Sorry!

Let it be said...discrimination is out there......always has been and always will be. Some places just get by it easier than others. It's VERY unfortunate & sad I think that this still exists, but in the health field and in many states its alive & well. If it's not about the length of your hair no matter how well kept it is then it would be something else like an earring. I wish you well in your endevor!

I will just say taht several of the doctors and techs at the hospital where I live have long hair, and yes they are surgeons. I am from IL originally and I don't imagine that you will have a huge problem there but then again like the others said, there are always people out there who discriminate about one thing or another. If you are worried, just cut your hair for a little while, and let it grow after you get the job. Or WAIT and see what happens after you go through your clinicals. Maybe the hospital you go to for your clinicals will hire you , and then you don't have to worry about it. Good Luck!!!!
