I enjoy my evening wine, after the kids are in bed! I have about 3-4 glasses. Well if I don't have it, I don't sleep well at all. I am just wondering if there is something out there to help me sleep. I want to quit drinking....alcoholism runs in my family. Anyway I am scared to go to sleep without out it. I start to fall asleep and then my body does this weird jumpy thing. Kind of like when you are dreaming that you "trip" you just kind of shake. Has anyone had luck with Melatonin?
Thanks in advance!

Hi, I've been a lurker on this board for a LONG time, just wanted to comment on something I'm all too familiar with, I will have been dry for one year this June 14, after being a hardcore alcoholic. Went I went into Detox, my arms and legs jerked so much when I tried to sleep it was almost commical. Unfortunately, it is also a sign that you need to start weaning your body from the alcohol, I was told this happens when your body is physically craving it, which means you are probably drinking too much, even if it is just 3 or 4 glasses of wine a night.

Hey Casey6, How long did the leg/arm jerking last for you? How do you feel now being sober for 1 year? How is your energy? Is alcohol withdrawl deadly? Or are the wd effects just hard to deal with at times? My birthday is coming up here in a few days, and I would like my drinking journey to end, but I am nervous! I hope you don't mind me asking, but how much did you drink a day?

I have honestly never felt better, I won't lie, I do miss it sometimes, but I know that my life became hell. I looked like hell, I felt like hell, and I'm sure had some health issues. How much did I drink? In the beginning, probably as much as you, 3,4 glasses of wine per night, and I was fine this way, for about a year or two. Fast Forward to my last year of drinking, easily a liter of wine and a few beers per night, and if I ran out of that, I would start doing "a shot or two just to take the edge off" if I was feeling crappy from the night before. I basically blacked out everynight. I never missed work, never drank and drove. I drank at home. My husband almost left me near the end, and one morning I woke up with my heart racing, head spinning, and looked in the mirror, my eyes were swollen, blood shot, my face was puffy, I was done. I checked into rehab the next day, and never looked back. One of the cool things was my transformation. Within two weeks, my eyes were bright and clear, I lost the alchol bloat, let alone about 20 pounds of junk food and booze.. My diet is good, (I pretty much stopped eating when I drank, it ruined the buzz) Plus the feeling of accomplishment is something I can't even describe, I have no problem being around people that drink, in fact it's kind of comical, knowing that at one point, I was the person that was slurring, sloppy, and falling over my own feet!! My marriage has improved 100%, we feel like we have a whole new life!! Good luck to you, feel free to ask away if you have anymore questions!!!

Oh, forgot your other questions, the twitches only lasted about 3 days, but I could'nt sleep at all for about a week, then I tried lunesta, slept like a baby, and stopped taking it after about a week, and have been good ever since!!

wow thanks for sharing. How long were you in rehab? I am so glad to hear how well you are doing and how your life has changed. It gives me motivation. I would like to stop the evening wine thing just because I know it could get worse. I have seen my Mom go through it. She has been sober for almost 2 years and is also doing great! Loads of energy!
Thank you!
