My husband was diagnosed with HVC last Dec after an episode of portal hypertension gone bad. He bled out approx. 3 pints and was rushed to the hosp. Since then life has been very confusing and scary! I'm hoping I can find help and answers here.
The drs have told us that he has HVC genotype 1, portal hypertension, and stage 5 cirrhosis of the liver.
They don't seem to know what to do with him. They say they are afraid to do a liver biopsy because after punching a hole in his liver they may not be able to stop the bleeding.
So after all these months they have decided to start him on Peg intron and Rebitol treatment June 22. He is very afraid of side effects. Says that he "has things to do".
My questions are.
I hear a lot here about fibrosis but his drs have never mentioned it. Did we skip over that one?
Is there really any hope that going thru this treatment will help him? From what they tell us he seems to be pretty far along this happy little trail.
MY question to those of you who have really researched this...should I be thinking about my life as a widow or could I possible expect to drag another 10yrs or so outta his cute fanny? He absolutely refuses a liver transplant.
His question...will going thru this miserable treatment help with his constant itching? It's 24/7 and he's gouged his poor body all over and his wife can't stand to sleep next to him anymore! It's my understanding that it's cause by his malfunctioning liver and that damage cannot be reversed???
We do not understand just how sick he is and nobody will tell us much. They check out his test..he has too much iron in his blood..he's enemic..he's not enemic..he's this..that..and come back in a month.
I'm thinking that stage 5 cirrhosis is a really bad thing but then during one visit the doc says his liver ain't that bad.........well gee!!!!!!!!
Love to hear ur comments!!!!
