Hi all. I have been Type 2 diabetic for 10 years now and am able to keep it under control by diet, keeping active and taking 2 x 850 mm tabs of metformin a day plus 1 x Avendia. However, for the past two years I have been suffering a sore bottom lip and a strange sore like sensation on the tip of my tongue which seems to manifest itself late afternoons and remains until I go to bed.

I am aware that one of the side effects of metformin is the decrease in vitamen B12 which can lead to a sore mouth or tongue but I have been checked out for B12 deficiency by my GP and the blood test proved negative. I have consulted my dentist and been referred to an ENT specialist but neither is able to come up with the answer. Just to be on the safe side, I have started taking a B12 supplement but so far I have not seen any improvement and I am wondering if any other Type 2 diabetics and Metformin takers have experienced the same problem.

Oh, dear, you have no replies. :( Um, I'm type two... I took metformin for about 3 years and avandia for less than 1. I'm now on insulin because my body hates me. :) Um, the closest I've ever come to what you described is a sore I get in the right corner of my mouth when my sugar goes high for an extended period of time. My research leads me to believe that its a little yeast infection thing.

If your sugar is well controlled, though, that shouldn't be a problem for you... So I don't really know...

Many thanks Happydwarf. As my GP has not come across my complaint before and no-one on this forum has responded, I am beginning to think the answer lay elsewhere. I would have thought if it were the medication, at least one person would have responded so I may well try posting the Anemia forum. Good luck.
