Hi guys, this is my first cycle monitoring my BBT and I must say it's not really working for me and I don't think is a method I would really recommend to others.
You see, according to a 99% reliable OPK the LH surge happened on Friday morning which means I probably ovulated either Saturday or Sunday - the little smiley face told me so!!! As if that weren't enough, my EWCM was a clear indication of impending O - and I mean clear as day. But, just in case that wasn't enough evidence, I also felt the legendary "mittelschmerz" (ovulation pains in the form of a mild twinge and some cramping in my lower abdomen which nagged me all through the weekend). I left the best one for the end, though. Last month I had some bloodwork that indicated that all hormonal levels seem to be in tip-top shape--including progesterone which happens on the second half of the cycle right after ovulation and causes the thermal shifts, apparently.
So, my question is: Why, oh why, is my temp NOT going up?? All other signs are there! My temp should have spiked by now. Could it be that my cheapo thermometer is not working right? How reliable is this method anyway??

It takes 24-48 hours for your temp to spike after ovulation, so if you didn't ovulate until Sunday, it may not spike until Tuesday. Also, some women don't have an immediate spike; instead they have a gradual increase in temperature. I wouldn't give up on the method yet--it's only your first month. Keep trying it, and you will start to see your individual pattern. They say you should temp for 3 months before you can see a reliable pattern. And I've been told that temping is more reliable than OPKs. OPKs don't work for every woman. Also, women in their 20s can have EWCM for up to 5 days, so if it just showed up on Friday, you may not have ovulated yet. Do you check your cervical position too? That could help you pinpoint ovulation too.
Best wishes!

Hi Jennio, thanks for the advice. It makes me feel better. :)
You're right, I might be jumping to conclusions. I'll keep tracking it and see where it takes me. Why do you say OPKs do not work well? Are they misleading?
I have no clue how to check the cervical position, but I'd appreciate any tips you could send my way. Is that reliable?

The book Taking Charge Of Your Fertility is a great book to help with check cm,cp,and tons of great info about bbt.
As for women in their 20s having up to 5 days of fertile cm that is iffy. I say that because Im in my 30s and I have had several cycles of EWCM that lasted 5 to 7 days. But I also drink a lot of green tea which is known to help with that. Though I have never had a problem with CM before.
Anyway as to OPKs they dont work for me. And I have had three different fertility drs tell that for some women they dont work. One said that it could simply be that I dont have enough hormone in my urine to to detect the LH surge. Which is no big deal because O was confirmed in other ways. The best way O was confirmed for me one time was the news that I was pregnant with my second son.
Also with me hpts are hit and miss so I rely on blood tests to know if Im pregnant or not.

You can have a LH surge and not release and egg, which is why OPK's are not reliable. If you did indeed release an egg than your progesterone will spike, causing an increase in temperature.

Nicky, I might not know who to make a boy or girl But I sure know that when I was going through the fertility treatments that when I got the ovulation pain that the egg had ALREADY released. I know this because I always get the pain and I use to get the vaginal ultrasounds during days 14 through when I ovulated. When taking the drugs I ovulated later so it was like day 16 would show my estrogen to be highest and then I took trigger shot that night and then waited one day then wen it for the IUI(intrauterine insemination) and on that day (day 18) I would have that God awful pain and dr. said well eggs are gone and that pain is there because the liquid that comes out during egg release irritates your body. So I would have to say that the ovulation happens before the pain, THEN the pain shows it was done.
But that doesnt mean that the quality of the eggs was good. I found this out the hard way. I have thyroid disease so I didnt wait the year they say to and thank God I didnt. Dr. checked my Estrogen(sometimes called Estrodial) during the time i was supposed to ovulate(day 14 at the time) and It was about 117 and The ultra sound showed one egg. It was a poor quality egg the dr. said. Meaning that when you have an egg that is mature your estrogen should show 200 or more for that egg to show that it was a good egg to fertilize. Since I had thyroid disease it had stopped me from producing good quality eggs. I took clomid(fertility drug) and the next cycle showed that I had 3 good eggs and my estrogen level was well over 600 !!!!! so that meant that ALL 3 were good!
I know they say not to jump the gun but that was my experience, if your dr. is testing you already maybe ask them to test you at day 14 and see what your estrogen is at that time. What day did you get the pain tihs month? It woudl be the first day you got the pain then just say the day before was when you ovulated. So if it was day 16 you got pain then day 15 you o'd. Ask dr. if she can test your levels at that time and see what they say.
Also and I will say this to everyone trying to conceive. YOU MUST make sure you get a good check up and all blood work like a thyroid test and a CBC. If you have a thyroid problem your fertility can suffer.

Nikki, yes one shoudl never loose hope at all. We were told that I wouldhave to go through treatment again, which we were actually gearing up for doing in Jan of 2006 I even went back to my RE to get a checkup and let her know we were thinking of it. Well guess my body was healed from the thyroid disease long enough to produce good eggs.! My dh had issues with his sperm, i think it was morphology, motility and count. The dr's said oh no oh no and that he might have a variclsil(sp) and he said bullcrap and he for our 3rd child took vit C and we both stopped drinking anything but water. IT absolutely made a huge difference. Your body just absorbs that water because we lack so much of it since we tend to not drink enough or any at all.
Good Luck
are you tracking your cycle online at all?
