The lithotripsy didn't break up my stone. It is 2CM and the urologist wants to do ureteroscopy this Thursday. I am so scared. I have been having a tough time with this stent in, urinating blood and been in so much pain. Has anyone had this procedure? If so, could you please tell me a little bit about this procedure, and let me know if it took care of your stone. Also how was the recovery? Please any advice and or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, Melissa

I had the ureteroscopy. It was pretty easy. I was asleep, and when I woke up, I was just really nauseaus (which is very normal for me anyways). The worst part of the recovery was the stent. After the stent was taken out I was good. It took care of the stones that were not in the kidneys. The ones in the kidneys are still there. It wasn't until about a week later that things started falling apart with pain again, so it wasn't the ureteroscopy that caused it. The worst part of the recovery was the stent. Good luck!!!

Thank You so much Daisy! My stone is in the kidney, the urologist said he was going to laser it. If you don't mind me asking, why do you still have stones in your kidneys? Could they not get them out? I am so worried that this procedure won't work, as the litho did not. I have been in so much pain with this stent, I just want it done and over with. Thank you so much for posting. Melissa

To be perfectly honest, I have no idea why he left the other stones in. He said that anotehr procedure would have been necessary to get out any stones in the kidneys, and that the ureteroscopy was only for stones outside of the kidney. But at this point, I don't so much know about my urologist. You can read about what went on in my threads. I think the one where I actually had the procedure done was called kidney stones, and then the next one was labeled kidney stone update. Anyways, I rally hope that this works for you. I hated having the stent in. I could barely move!!

Hey! Actually, I am home for summer break right now, so I don't go to that urologist, but I will be looking for one when I get back. Is yours good?? Do they have an office closer to NPR, as I can't really get around to much when I am in school, what with gas prices, and a lack of money? I really need a good urologist who will work with me. Hope your stent can come out really soon. Did the urologist say he was going to leave it in after the surgery??

Hi! My urologist isn't too too far from New Port Richey, it is actually in Hudson/Bayonet Point. Not far from S.R. 52.
He is pretty nice, and is open with me about things!Actually there are 3 urologists at that office. He did say I would need to keep the stent in after the procedure, but hopefully for only 4 or 5 days. I have had it in for almost 2 weeks so far, and I hate it! I will let you know how it goes. What type of stone do you have (calcium, uric acid, ...)? Knowing this might help in your decision.

I am not sure yet what type of stone I have. I passed a few tiny pieces with the Litho and took them to the Dr. It isn't much but he said it should be enough to test and see what it is made up of. He told me the laser will pretty much break up any type of stone, I am just worried because of the size. He told me it will be a tough job, and will take probably an hour of lasering. I hope recovery isn't too bad! I do hope this takes care of the problem! He told me since I am having so much trouble with having the stent in, there is no way I would be able to handle the perk in my back with the other procedure. Besides, that is more invasive and would rather avoid that if at all possible. I guess time will tell. Thanks for all of the replies, Melissa

I really hope that it goes well! Thanks for the info about where the dr is. I may just have to go there. I may not be going to school next semester however, so I don't know. It all depends, as I am on final probation next semester due to having a ton of absences, and if I am not better by then, I might better not go. I am not sure what to do at this point.
Anywho...I really hope that the ureteroscopy works for you. Keep me posted!! I really hope that the stent doesn't stay in to much longer as well. Those are definitely no fun!! Good luck!

Thanks Allie! I don't know what I would do without this board! I am reading up on posts and learning as much about kidney stones and procedures as I can. Helps me understand more about what I am going through and about to go through. I am a nervous wreck and the urologist is very aware of this, so I think he doesn't go into detail about things because he doesn't want to scare me more. I personally would rather know what I am in store for. I like to prepare myself, even though I am scared. Thanks again, Melissa

I feel it's better to know what lies ahead of us when we go in for any surgery..
When are you going in? Sorry if I missed that post...I'm in a different world lately.
I was supposed to go in to get the surgery tomorrow, but the surgery center says I have to pay half of the lithotripsy cost from last time and 20% of this procedure! That will be $732.97 and I don't have it! So, evidentally I cannot get the procedure done if I can't pay. I called my urologist office and the nurse is going to talk to the dr and let me know what to do, so we will see. I will die if I don't get out of this pain soon! With all of these bills I know I am about to reach out of pocket, and then my insurance will cover 100%. I understand they need to get paid, but if I don't have that amount right now I guess I am out of luck! Melissa
Melissa29
06-13-2007, 03:17 PM
I was thinking that too, but I am required to pay the 20% up front. My Dr called the billing dept of the surgery center and asked what they can do. They called me back and told me to pay the $200 for the procedure, which is the 20% and then just start making payments on the $1,000 I owe from the Lithotripsy as soon as possible. Luckily my husband gets paid Friday and I can post date a check for the $200. It's just awful being in this much pain and not having alot of money for these high cost procedures.
I have to be at the surgery center at 5:30am. lol I don't do mornings. It's a good thing they put me to sleep for this! I will give an update after the surgery. Thank you for being here for me!!!! Melissa

Alas due to the travesty of healthcare today, pain is not considered medical necessity. Now don't yell at me, I am relaying a fact that I think is COMPLETELY wrong. BUT due to the fact that you have symptoms other then pain (blood in the urine) you can get around that!

I really hope that it works out for you! I completely understand the not having money to pay. In that past, I have had to keep changing doctors because I could not afford my copays, and I have a lot of medical bills to pay. I owe one hospital over 10,000 due to having a surgery, 2 ER visits, and several diagnostic and nuclear medicine tests. That is with the insurance.
Anywho...I am 20 years old. I really hope that your surgery goes well tomorrow!! Hopefully it will be a success, and you won't have stones again. Now that I am strictly following the diet for calcium stones, I am hoping that I won't get anymore after all of these ones are gone. Let me know how everything goes!!

Hi there, just an update. I had the ureteroscopy with the laser surgery. I am still tired from the procedure, so I probably will lay down shortly after this note. lol They gave me medicine for my nausea through the iv this time so I didn't get sick. When I woke from the anesthesia I was shaking, so they gave me Demerol. (sp) The Dr. talked to my husband and said the laser was able to break up the stone, but there might be some bigger pieces to pass. So far good news.I am not in any pain yet, the medicine hasn't quite wore off yet. He said the pain I will have will more than likely be from the stent. I guess he put in a new stent afterwards. So far I have not passed any pieces. But sooner or later I have to, right? Thanks for the support everyone. Take Care, Melissa

Thank You everyone! I will be glad when this is all over with, and terribly happy when I get this stent out! I do feel a bit worse today. I am taking Levsin for spasms and Darvocet for pain. My Dr said Darvocet isn't the best pain medicine, but I wanted it because it seems strong enough for me, and I don't like the way I feel on percocet or Vicoden. The Darvocet does take the edge off! My throat and the roof of my mouth hurts pretty bad this morning, and my neck feels sore. I wonder if it is from the breathing tube or whatever they put down my throat! I still haven't passed any pieces through the strainer. I am a bit concerned about that, but my husband was told by the Dr that he was able to break up the whole thing with the laser. So, still waiting! Hope everyone feels better soon! I think having kidney stones are horrible, and this is definitely the most painful experience I have had yet. (Worse than natural childbirth) lol I really thought I had a high pain tolerance, but I am not so sure now!!!! Take Care, Melissa

Thanks Daisy! I just found out they are scheduling me for the 27th to be put under to take the stent out. The thing I am worried about is the Dr may need to laser some more while he is already there. I am upset a little because he told my husband the stone broke up and I thought it was all over with! I am So Sorry!!! I hope you feel better soon! I am still very sore, but I guess I was in an awkward position in the stirrups for a long time, now that I think about it. Weird being put under and not actually knowing what is going on. I am just numbing myself with Darvocet every 4-6 hours to try and get comfortable. I am scheduled for the stent to be removed on the 27th as far as I know. They should call me Monday with an approximate time. I am returning back to work this Monday, so I hope I feel a little better by then. Hard trying to work with this uncomfortable stent in. My urologist told me if he took it out before it was time, I would be in worse pain than with it in. I think this new stent is a little more comfortable than the last one, not quite sure why. Maybe it is in a different way, or smaller....not sure, but doesn't seem to be pinching me quite as much and making me have as bad as spasms as last time. (Knock On Wood) I hope I didn't speak too soon! Does this make sense? Have you ever felt a difference after they changed the stent?

Thanks Allie, I am glad that makes sense about the stents. I returned to work yesterday and I did pretty good until about 3pm and the room started spinning and I about passed out. I just broke down and cried, and my boss drove me home. He said I had no color in my face.I am not sure why I feel like this. I called the urologist office and they told me it wouldn't have anything to do with the stent or procedure and I should go to the ER that I might need to get some blood work and follow up with my Primary. Alot of people tell me to lay off the Darvocet and that may be causing me to feel like that. But just stand the pain? When I came home from work my A/C fan motor was broken and it was like I sauna in my house. I live in Florida!!! I tell ya, I have some Bad Luck! So we called around and finally had someone come out and put a new motor in $200 later and at 12:30 at night. I didn't get much sleep so I slept in this morning and did not make it to work. I am so scared of losing my job, but don't know what to do. When I do go I am just miserable and uncomfortable and end up having to go home. Sorry I rambled on so much, just wanted to vent. Hi Allie, Hi Daisy! Thanks for asking about me. I took my son to daycare this morning and planned to head to work, but decided I felt too bad and pulled into the hospital. I checked myself into the ER. They did a urinalysis and bloodwork and an X-Ray. The bloodwork showed I had infection, either a UTI or a kidney infection, not quite sure. The dr says that is probably why I have so much pain in that left side and my back. Maybe that is why I have been so weak and light headed as well. They ran antibiotics through an IV and gave me a prescription for antibiotics, and 800mg Ibuprofen. I asked for the Ibuprofen since the Darvocet made me feel so dizzy. I just found out I will have to stop taking the Ibuprofen by Friday, so I can only take it for a couple of days. My urologist office said I have to stop taking it 5 days before they put me under to remove the stent, because it thins the blood. (That Figures) Well, I guess I will try and get to work tomorrow! I definitely need to get some sleep tonight. I am always waking up in the middle of the night with pain. Hope everyone else is doing good! Talk to you soon! Melissa

Depends on the doctor and the stent. I have had mine removed in the office with nothing but a local. As nervous as I was it was easy. It was easier then an annual pap test so don't worry much about removing it. It does casue spasms afterwards but they do subside.

Thanks! Still not sure what the stone was made up of. So far my Dr has told me to avoid soda, tea and coffee. 3 of my favorite things! Although since all of this I have drank mostly water, maybe a little Sierra Mist. Any ideas on what else I might avoid? The urologist told my husband he will refer me to a specialist that will tell me what not to eat or drink. But that won't be until atleast 6-8 weeks from now. My mother knows someone that uses herbs to keep stones away. Not sure about that, but at this point I might try anything to avoid going through all of this again! Take Care, Melissa

Hi HopeSprings2, I posted that the Litho did not work for me. That doesn't mean it doesn't work, or hasn't worked for other people. It's just the type of stone maybe, or the size of stone I had. Mine was rather large. Melissa

Do you remember the game Mission Control from the 80s? (Yes I am dating myself). This is Lithotripsy but there is no game console. They shoot lasers at the end target and may or may not find the target and may or may not shoot enough for the target to break. I had one litho that did not work and one that did.

How is everyone feeling? I am feeling so much better now that the stent is out. Pretty much back to normal. My Primary Physician was a bit concerned that my liver enzyme levels were high, so I had to do some blood work the other day. Hope this doesn't open a whole new chapter! The kidney stone was enough to deal with! I am praying that the medicine I was taking made the levels go up a bit. If they are still high, I will have to take more tests to see why. Hope everyone has a good weekend. Melissa

Hi! After the Litho didn't work, 2 weeks later the Dr. did the Laser procedure through my ureter. I would definitely recommend this over the invasive surgery through the back. It broke the stone completely up. Good Luck! Keep in touch! Melissa

Hey! Things are going kinda rough. In pain and not allowed to take anything for pain due to being anemic or whatever (they say it could cause internal bleeding, which I already may have). But, I am getting over it. How are you doing? Hopefully well!!

I had Litho last Monday for 10mm stone in left kidney. Didn't work. CT shows the stone was reduced to 7mm and moved to top of ureter. Scheduled for Uretoroscopy Monday, the day after tomorrow. I'm ready. Peeing quantities of blood. Constant flank pain that is only reduced by oral meds.
My only worry is the stent. I understand it can cause continuous flank pain and is very painful to remove.
Can anybody describe how they actually remove the stent? I am a 68 year old male in otherwise pretty good shape.

I feared the stent removal and it was not bad at whole. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and it is over. May have spasms afterwards. Eat a lot of parsley before and after to counter this.

I hadn't heard the parsley bit, just drinking lots of water. What does the parsley do?
Do they just manually pull the stent out or do they use some kind of an instrument up the urethra? Is it the same for a male as a female, other than the length of the urethra?
I'm not looking forward to the ureteroscopic procedure tomorrow, but the stent thing really has me worried.

Well, I had the utereoscopic surgery on Monday which took about two hours. I was in intense pain for a couple of hours after coming out from under the general anesthesia. They tried several meds without success and finally shot me up with intravenous Terasol which was a life saver. I awoke with a foley catherter installed and it was excruciatingly uncomfortable. Removing the foley about four hours later was a pain I will not soon forget. It felt like they pulled my urethra out along with the catheter. Everytime I urinate, or try to urinate, I get intense kidney spasms along with severe burning sensations all through the urethra. It was supposed to be outpatient surgery, but due to the pain I was having, they kept me overnight. Got the IV Terasol every five hours until I was discharged after about 26 hours.
They put in a stent that will stay in place for nearly three weeks. I asked if a stent was necessary and that I would prefer not to have one. The doc said with the location and size of my stone, a stent was necessary. The stent did not have a string hanging out, and it will require an office visit and some urethral anesthetic to remove it using a utereoscope.
I'm not in any real discomfort as I sit here, but urinating still causes terrible stinging and some kidney spasms. The meatus of my penis is red and raw looking, is sore to the touch and stings like the dickens when I pee or use a sanitary swab. I think they must have had to dialate the meatus to get their instruments in. All in all, this has been my worst nightmare.
To answer a previous question: No they did not put in a stent when I had the original lithotripsy - No need. The stone or stones are supposed to break down into sand or powder sized pellets and can be comfortably passed. Unfortunately, in my case, the stone was too hard and the Lith hardly fazed it.
The doc said the stent was like a soda straw, coated in Teflon to help remove it. Apparently, the end of the stent hangs out of the ureter into the bladder, just waiting for something to grab it and pull it out. UGH!

Parsley is a natural antispasmatic
Do they just manually pull the stent out or do they use some kind of an instrument up the urethra?
They use water to pull it out - now sure how it is done with a male.
Is it the same for a male as a female, other than the length of the urethra?

Had the stent removed last week. Piece of cake. Urethra deadened with Lidocaine gel. Slight sting as scope pushed by prostate, but that was all. No pain, no cramping, no kidney spasms when stent and scope pulled out - basically felt nothing.
Passed blood and had minor sting when urinating for a couple of hours. All in all, it was MUCH less traumatic than what I had anticipated.
