Hello, I've just registered, but have read the Boards for months. Very informative. I've had HBP for years and have kept it controlled with meds and lifeystyle (have even reduced meds with natural products). However, just recently it's gone up and we (husband and I) take my bp very often to chart it for doctor....when I decide to go back. However, to my question....most of the time husband gets a much lower reading when he takes it than when I do. (he gets 138/74; I get 170/90) What's up with this. Is there an explanation. He's got good hearing so I don't think that's the problem. Am I hearing my own heartbeat and getting a false reading. Do others out there take your own blood pressure? We use a manual, pump up kind. Thanks for any help.

Hello Judy and welcome! :)

However, to my question....most of the time husband gets a much lower reading when he takes it than when I do. (he gets 138/74; I get 170/90)

It's admirable that you've been able to stay off the BP meds! It's always good to hear these success stories. We don't hear them often enough! :blob_fire

There can be a simple solution to your problem. If you take that route, it will cost you about 160 dollars.
Why not get an automatic/electronic blood pressure monitor, such as OMRON?
When buying mine at the pharmacy, I had two criteria.

1/ the most accurate
2/ the easiest to use

The pharmacist came back with an armload of BP monitors but there was only one that met my needs without any doubt.

A lot depends on the accuracy of our BP readings, especially when the BP is not easily controlled. I have since had my BP monitor checked twice by the doctor (over a 6 month period) and it works with great accuracy. It is extremely easy to use and you will not need your husband's help with your frequent BP monitoring.

Good luck and keep up the good work! :)

We have found an electronic monitor is more accurate for us. I also notice the way I hold my arm makes a difference. My BP is higher if my arm is not level. I usually place my forearm on a small pillow.
Good luck!

Thanks for those tips. I am about to give up on the manual, pump up type. The differences in our readings scare me. I have an Omron HEM-713C, also, and have been using it---and like the readings. I just felt that because those readings were SO good and the manual readings were not so good, possibly the electronic monitor was not correct. I need to have it calibrated with the doctor's, I guess, before I get too relaxed. Thanks
