I had a bunionectomy 4 weeks ago. I have always been a fast healer, but things are not healing as quickly as I expected. My incision is red, swollen and it looks as if a keloid is forming. There are 2 small spots that still ooze when I remove a sock. I have some swelling that improves when I stay off my feet. I have expressed concern to my doctor about a possible infection & was put on an antibiotic, but have not noticed any changes in appearance. I should mention that I'm a RN (but not in orthopedics or podiatry).
I trust my doctor, but also know in my field that sometimes you have to keep on the doctor with a concern that just doesn't seem right to you. Has anyone had a similar experience? Thanks!

I'm prone to getting stitch abscesses after surgery, so yeah, I've been there. However, in all cases my doctor stayed on top of things and didn't release me until the incisions closed.

I, too, was very frustrated with my incision/swelling/etc. at 4 weeks out. There were still a few spots on my incision that kept feeling like they'd pull apart just when they were almost healed, and I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't have closed by 4 weeks out. I'm healthy, was resting, icing, elevating, eating lots of protein, and don't smoke, and I've always been a good healer. I was sure I had an infection, but the doc. said I didn't (my ooze apparently was standard, healthy ooze). At just about 4 weeks, I decided to go back to non-weight-bearing (back on crutches) for a few days to give that poor incision time to heal w/out any pulling. It worked like a charm, and ever since then I've been getting steadily better. Good luck!
