Does anyone know if there is an interaction between the tricyclic antidepressant drug Amitriptyline (which was prescribed to me for a pain syndrome caused by nerve damage) and the psycho stimulant Modafinil (Provigil, Alertec) (which was prescribed to me for excessive daytime sleepiness)?
I was already having issues with excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, tiredness, etc. - and just recently my dermatologist prescribed a very sedating and drowsy medication (Amitriptyline) to treat my skin pain syndrome and I've been literally sleepwalking as of lately...
So I REALLY need to know if my usual wakefulness-promoting drug (Modafinil) will have any problems if combined with Amitriptyline.
Thanks for your help.
EDIT:
I found this info (but still not sure what this means):
Moderate Drug-Drug Interaction: amitriptyline (amitriptyline) and modafinil (modafinil)
The concomitant administration of modafinil may result in altered plasma levels and effects of tricyclic antidepressants (TCA). Modafinil is a modest CYP450 2C19 inhibitor in vitro and this is an alternate TCA metabolic pathway for patients who are deficient in CYP450 2D6 (approximately 7-10% of Caucasians). Although a study found no interaction between clomipramine and modafinil, one case of increased clomipramine levels has been reported. If these drugs are to be used together, monitoring of the patient for altered efficacy and safety is recommended, especially if the patient is known to be a poor debrisoquine metabolizer. Dose adjustments may be required if an interaction is suspected.
