I saw a thing on the news about it a week or two ago. It works by reducing your body's ability to absorb fats from food. The bad part is, the fats have to go somewhere (you probably see where I'm going with this).
Let's just say it'll give you some trouble in the restroom.

It's the same thing as Xenical but have the dosage in each pill.
At GNC the sell 90 Capsules $59.99
Or a bottle of 60 Capsules $49.99
Or a bottleof 120 Capsules $69.99
The The alli™ Diet Plan $19.95 but it's on sale for $14.95
There is also a Alli book for $4.95
I'd think it would make you use the restroom the way Olestra AKA Olean does.

To my knowledge, Alli was just made available as an over-the-counter supplement today. I'm definately going to try it. From my understanding, you really don't experience any side effects unless you are eating too much fat. The program suggests no more than 15 g of fat per meal. So if you plan on taking the pills and continuing to eat a higher fat diet, you're just wasting your time (and a lot of money).

You're correct it's was released today. GNC has it for the below prices. It's the same as Xenical. Each pill of Alli has half the dosgae as a pill of Xenical (I typed "have" instead of "half" in the post below)
GlaxoSmithKline bought the US rights to Xenical from Roche a year ago. Alli is made by the same company. Some reports have suggested that Alli will cause the same reaction in some people the same way that Olean did.
Makes no sense if you ask me. People can take 2 pills instead of one and have the same strength of dosage of Xenical that you need a prescription for. What ever brings in the money I suppose.

I also thought of trying Alli, but once I read the Mayo Clinic's info on it, I changed my mind. Some of the possible side effects are loose stools, uncontrollable stools, oily flatulance (sp) and other 'fun' things like that. The chance of any of those was enough for me to change my mind. I'll go back to the lipodrene lite (taking only 1/2 tab 2x a day) and try to control my eating better. It's tough since I've quit smoking though. All I want to do is eat and junk food always tastes better than carrots or celery ...lol.

The starter kit for $49 only has enough to last 3 weeks. I haven't started yet because they recommend you start your eating plan first and then start the pills a few days later.

There was a segment about Alli on Fox News - they said if you take Alli - better bring a change of clothes with you to work - you'll need it. Why take something that would re-act with your GI system? It was also stated that there is no magic pill - it's still the same old reliable way to lose weight - good nutrition and exercise. Alli is also not for those who want to lose 5-10 pounds.

I may try this since I can't seem to get on track on my own...
I like the idea of the "side effects". Those who get the side effects are the ones who still eat badly (ex high fat) and thats not what Alli is for. It's not a pill to make you lose weight and you can keep eating the way you use to. It's like a tool to remind you that you cannot eat the way you were before you were trying to lose weight. I don't know from experience, but I think that as long as you stick to the eating plan, you shouldn't have a problem with the side effects...
But like I said, I may go to walgreens and buy myself the starter pack just to test it out...

I read it was the same side effects as Olean. I ate those chips.... the WOW chips. It gave me greasy stools. When I thought I only needed to pass gas I was I wrong. It was actually fatty greasy clear jelly stuff that came out.
I'm glad I was home cause that would have been VERY embarrassing. I did have to change my clothes. After a few weeks I guess my body became adjusted to it cause the side effects stopped happening whenever I'd eat them. I'd have solid stools but you could see the beads of oil in them.

I started Alli yesterday and only ate 10g of fat in my first meal on it and did okay. I was a little gassy and the stool was a little loose but not terrible.
I eat a lot of fruits & veggies in between my main meals to fill in the gaps.
My body is still adjusting. If anything, it prevents me from eating foods I love to eat but are bad for me.
Hope to see good results over time...not looking for a quick fix.

I've been taking it since last Friday evening. Had no trouble until today. I have been eating very low fat food, but yesterday had grilled cheese sandwich for lunch and then spaghetti with hamburger in it at supper. Today had a cup of coffee in the morning then had oatmeal with skim milk. Soon after I went to the restroom and passed the fat from the night before. Later in the day after a low fat lunch I was working and suddenly passed a bit of gas that didn't know was going to happen and I did pass a bit of oily greasy stuff. Immediately ran to the bathroom and tried to correct the mishap. Tonight I ate very low fat again at supper ( grilled chicken breast, broccoli and some bing cherries. Major gas! no more oily accidents. If you plan to take this stuff don't even think about eating even slightly high fat food if you are going to be away from home. I think the problems today all stemmed from the two fat meals yesterday because up to that point I had 0 diarhea. It may be also that the medicine takes a few days to really do what it's suppose to do. I will continue to take it, but I've stocked my fridge with veggies fruits fish and chicken. I am not what you would call obese, but I am slightly overweight and have been more overweight in the past before I lost 40 pounds on Weight Watchers. I ate a diet low in fat previous to starting the Alli but had kind of gotten to a plateau on my weight loss. I've got a vacation at the beach coming up in 2 weeks and I only plan to take it until then. I walk about 40 minutes every evening. Good luck if you decide to try it. I weighed myself on a Wednesday, started the pill on Friday evening. As of Wednesday I've lost 2 pounds.

I have been on Alli for one week with no problems. I have been scared straight to watch my fat grams closely so I don't have any accidents. On Alli's website I have read where some women are taking a fiber capsule in the am to help with loose stools and it is really helping. Someones doctor had rec. that when she was on Xenical before. I am like you ninelives, we leave on vacation in 2 weeks and don't want to chance a problem so I will stop a day or two in advance.
I know this is not a magic pill. I could lose weight with reducing my calories and eating low fat, but the pill keeps me honest. I know once that pill goes down my throat, I have to be good. Motivation has been a big problem for me and I think Alli will help that. Good luck to anyone trying Alli. Ann

I agree that it certainly keeps you honest. It was baked fish for me at supper time along with veggies and fruits. I am noticing alot of gas and I wonder if the fiber pill might even make that worse. The gas could also be coming from the veggies and fruits because they are easy for me to over indulge in as well.

I would like tosay that I will lose 20 pounds on Alli, but in reality I will be happy with 10 or 15 pounds. I would try it for only 1o pounds. Ninelives, I have noticed alot of gas too and I am not taking a fiber pill. I think it is all the veggies. I have not been a great veggie eater in the past, so my system is probably confused! I am urinating alot too, so some water weight must be coming off. Yesterday and today my appetite has gone down alittle. I know Alli doesn't have anything in it to curb my appetite, but something is helping my cravings. Hope you do well, I want this to be the last time I go on the weight loss merry-go-round! Ann

I'm wanting to lose about 10 pounds also. If you have stomach issues like gallbladder probs the warnings specifically mention that. I've not had any acid reflux with it. Cruisers my appetite has not been too bad either. I had just mentioned that to my husband tonight. I've thought about taking maybe some GasX along with my meal. I'm peeing alot too, but I think that goes with eating high protein like chicken and fish.
Ariesgirly the main thing with it that I have found is that you have to commit to cutting back fats. I had heart bypass surgery at age 41 so I cut back on fat 6 years ago so it was really easy for me.

Alli was approved by the FDA for over the counter sale in April. Diarrhea is a side effect if you go over 30% fat daily from your calories. I think most us who started taking Alli realized if you don't stay on track you will pay, but I needed something to make me accountable. If I could lose weight without any help I would weight 125! Even if I never lose one pound I am learning that low fat eating isn't that bad, hopefully I will be able to continue after I stop Alli. I have been on Alli for over a week now with zero side effects. This won't be for everyone, nothing ever is. To those who choose to take Alli, I wish you good luck. We should check in here every so often to see how everyone's doing. Ann

Know what guys? I experience many of those same side effects when I sit up and eat crap and high fat foods all day. So I'm certainly not going to let those same side effects deter me from taking Alli. If you're keeping your fat grams between 15 and 18 per meal, then you should not have those side effects.

I bought it this weekend at Wal-Mart for $50- which is about a month's supply of pills. There is also a cookbook out there for those on Alli, it has quite a few low calorie and low fat recipes so it's obviously good for anyone trying to lose weight- on Alli or not.
I took my first pill this morning and had a very healthy breakfast full of protein and fruit. This pill's side effects do scare me to make sure the fat content of my food is low. I'm excited to see what this pill will do for me. I do not plan on being on it for more than a month since only want to lose about 15-20 pounds.
I'm hoping this month gives me a total of 10 pounds lost since Alli is supposed to help you lost 50% MORE weight in addition to diet and exercise which will help me lose 4-8 pounds, so with Alli I can healthily lose 6-12 pounds.
The past few times I have tried to lose weight I have done well with eating and exercise but the weight just didn't seem to come off. I don't know about you guys but my biggest motivating factor is progress- if I see I lost 4 pounds I am determined to lose more and definitely not gain.
I'm not using this as a miracle drug, just something to help me out in the initial stages of setting up my lifestyle change. I honestly think that's the way to go with Alli.
Good luck to all- Alli takers or not.

Day 1 is over for me- had no side effects but I ate very healthy minus the fact that my dinner might have had a bit too many fat grams.
*******This next part is a bit graphic*************
This morning, beginning of day 2 I went to the bathroom and while nothing crazy or horrible happened, I did notice little fat/oil droplets in the toilet water. It was actually pretty cool because it's pretty much seeing alli work with my own eyes.
Like I said I was pretty good day 1 eating wise and jogged/walked 3 miles in about 42 minutes.
I'm really excited about Alli now!

For the first time in almost 2 weeks, I noticed the same "orange oil" this am. No diarrhea, normal bm, just a few drops of the oil. I went over yesterday, had about 35% of my total calories from fat, that must have been too much. I was almost glad to see the discharge, now I know it is really working! My husband is down almost 6 pounds and he started several days after me. I have not weighed yet, but some clothes feel alittle looser. Hope everyone else is doing ok. Ann

Good luck Ninelives, hope you see some weight loss. I feel fine, in fact gallbladder discomfort is much better eating low fat and Alli hasn't caused any problem. People wonder how Alli works if you can start or stop whenever you want to. That's true with any medicine, but if I'm going to spend the money I'm going to take it to get the benefits of it. So many people have opinions on Alli when they have not tried it. Maybe it will help me, maybe not, but I'm going to give it the old college try!

(I will be preparded just in case) But it sounds like it you stick to the plan there are no side effects. I wonder if any of you could tell me if the side effect came because you where not 100% with the 15g of fat?
I am still going to give it a try. If I can lose 10 pounds and alli turns it into 12-15 it will motovate me to stick with it. I need to lose 50 pounds. :blob_fire

I will try to answer a few of your questions from my own experience so far. The gas, yes at first it is bad. But I was eating more veggies which could add to the problem. It does improve with time. If you stay to the amount of fat grams per meal that you are supposed to, you shouldn't have any side effects. I have had none in 3 weeks except for the 4th of July which was my own fault. I took a pill at lunch, but still had diarrhea yesterday from the huge fatty meal I had at supper on the 4th. Today I feel fine, I stayed within my fat grams and calories yesterday. I am steadily losing about 1-2 pounds per week. My acne even looks better! Alli will block 25% of the fat grams you have in one meal, whether you are in your fat gram range or over. But, if you are over you might get the side effects. Hope everyone is doing well, I know this isn't a magic pill, but I am sure going to stay on track after that one episode! Ann

thanks cruisers.. I sort of thought if a person stays within they might not have the side effect and if you don't, well crap! :) I am going to start Monday. Even tho I will be at work. it will be easier if I have any side effect than on the weekend. We have a lake house, friends and a boat, So I can't do it on the weekend.. Sounds like it is working good for you. Thanks for the imfo.. I know it is not a magic pill, but just maybe something to keep me in line.. You know there is a pill for people that drank and smoke that makes them ill if they do. I guess it is the same sort of thing here.. Wouldn't you say? Do you know if you have a protien drink for Breakfast that has 2 grams of fat if I should take the pill. I'm thinking yes, but I wonder with it not being food but a drink if it will cause me to have some side effects. What do you think?

My husband is on Alli too and has several beers in the evening a few times a week. There are no fat grams in alcohol, so he doesn't take a pill, but count it on your calories. You still need to stay within your calorie range or you won't lose as well. He has had no problems with any side effects. We both had some of the gas at first, but I really think it was from eating more veggies than we were used to. I have never been a breakfast eater, so I don't take a morning pill. I have coffee and a banana which doesn't any fat so I don't waste a pill. I am still losing on 2 pills a day. I think everyone has to figure out what will work for them in their lifestyle. I am have been very pleased with my results so far. I have been a yo-yo dieter for many years. I hope this will be the last time. I really needed something to make me accountable. I know you can stop the pills whenever you want and start eating bad again, but I am too cheap. Alli is fairly expensive and I am not going to let the pills sit on a shelf. Good luck, lets keep in touch to check everyone's progress. Ann

I just started alli today, I need to find out if I am doing this right... I am not a breakfast person so I had 1 cup of grapes and 2% milk, so the grapes are .3
fat of grams and 1 cup of 2% milk is 4.8 I took the pill while I was eating. I am nervous about taking anything so someone please tell me It is going to be ok and if so far I am doing this right. Also I take the multi vitamin before bed right?
Thank you so much

Alicia,
If you are nervous about taking Alli, start out slow with maybe one or two pills a day to see how you do. I don't eat breakfast either, so I don't even take one in the am. Taking it with your meal is fine. I have read that you can take it up to an hour after your meal and it will still work. Alli has nothing in it to make your heart rate go up or make you nervous or jittery. It blocks 25% of fat grams once your food gets into your intestines so it helps you lose weight alittle faster. I think the great majority of us taking Alli are doing fine, but not everyone will be able to take. Some might have other health or bowel problems that will cause them to have more side effects. No pill works for everyone. Hope you do well on it. Ann

Just checking to see how everyone is doing on alli? How many grams of fat are you not suppose to go over? I keep hearing different things. I heard if you are doing 1200 cal, 12 grams of fat each meal and do not go over 39 that day is that right???

I am going by the companion guide that came with my Alli. For 1200 calories you have 12 fat grams per meal with 3 fat grams left for a snack. I would not go over that at all. If you stick to the fat grams allowed for your calories per day you should be fine. I have not weighed for awhile, but I can see my face is looking thinner. I guess you always start at the top and work down! We are leaving for vacation tomorrow so this might get interesting now. We are going to try to stay as close to the plan as we can. I hate to gain back what I have worked hard for the last 4 weeks. Hope things are going well for you. Ann

It's been a slow week as far as weight loss...it's "that time of the month" so I'm thinking that's part of the reason why. Still trying to stick to it though.

How is everyone doing? We just got back from vacation and I did pretty well. Had a couple of bad meals but I didn't take a pill so no side effects. My husband didn't gain anything, he stayed the same weight. We are both back on the wagon again. My weight loss is slow too, but I can tell I am losing some inches my pants feel better. Hope everyone is doing well. Ann

It's great to hear that many are having success with Alli. It will take me 6 months to lose 20 pounds! Boy, weight really comes off slow when your hormones or lack of get in the way. I know it would come off faster too if I excercised more, but I really HATE exercise. I do walk but not fast enough or long enough. I will work on that. Everyone keep up the good work. Ann

I dont know if its from the alli or medifast, i had started medifast before alli. I would like to add one thing about alli, I do not get loose stools, but i go at least 3-4 times a day which is very unusual for me. The only bad part is the gas, it is terrible and it may just slip out, all i try to do is run from it and hide so know one knows its me:) Good luck to everyone

I have gas problems too, but it really is bad with certain vegs I eat. My weight loss is very slow. I am getting pretty discouraged. I haven't cheated except for maybe 2 meals in the last 5 weeks. I know I am old and weight comes off slower, but this is ridiculous. I will buy one more month of Alli and if I don't see some improvement I will continue to diet but not spend the money for Alli. I talked with a man my age last week and he gave up bread for 1 week and lost 6 pounds. It will take me till Jan. to lose 6 pounds the rate I am going. Ann

Are there limits to alli? I mean as far as how much you want to lose? Should you only take it if you want to lose more than 10 pounds? What if I only want to lose 5? Does anyone know?

i started about 4-5 weeks ago and have only lost about 7 lbs. i get discouraged because my gas is SOOOOOOOO bad. it's beyond embarassing! so due to the bad gas, i am not taking the alli consistently. i try to be gas free for the weekends!

hi, this is my first post, but thought i would let you know my experiences with xenical. i was 7 stone (100+ lbs) overweight. i have lost 5 and a half stone - 80lbs -since january by eating lower fat, counting calories, taking my pill and exercising a bit more.i have never lost weight so easily. i have had no side effects so far but admit i miss a pill if im going to overindulge.
2 problems i now have. one due to my quick weight loss i have now got gallstones. so i cant indulge in my favourite fatty treats any longer(couple biscuits and packets of crisps are ok now and then). secondly due to my low fat diet plus the xenical blocking another approx 30% i have very dry skin. i eat a lot of oily fish and take omega 3 capsules but it hasnt really helped. im afraid my face in particular has really suffered.
still i still feel positive about xenical. its really helped keep me motivated. over here we dont have alli and i know drs wont prescribe xenical unless you have a bmi higher than 30.

I have only lost 5 pounds since I started Alli. I have no gas or other problems. I stay constipated so Alli helps me stay regular. I also avoid most fatty foods. Once a week I may have a fast food meal. Alli does remind you that you can't eat a lot of fat or you get the side effects. I have avoided them so far.
