I'm going on anti-depressants next week and was just wondering what the deal was with drinking alcohol while on them. Is it perfectly okay? Do you have to abstain from taking your tablet on the day you plan to drink? Is it outright forbidden?

Depends on different people really, I tend to get drunk much quicker and I get very excited soon after drinking, then stupidly depressed after a couple of hours... the general advice is to stay away from drinking, or drink as little as possible... which is sth I still cant do... my doctor knows it, but she doesnt seem to want to stop me... coz to be honest, it really helps me to relax and I can sleep easier after a couple of pints... but it's just me...

Alcohol tends to be multiplied when taken with antidepressants. Drinking is still possible but you need to be real careful. The reason I responded was about not taking the med while drinking. Antidepressants need to be taken every day and as close to the same time as possible. It differs abit from drug to drug but a med like Effexor you have to be pretty diligent with. If you miss a dose on this drug your body reacts pretty quickly.

take care
