HPV and Oral Sex!
How safe is it for a man to perform oral sex on a woman if she has HPV?

I know it's graphic, but I had to ask...

You know what, I have no idea! I have seen this topic come up time and again, but it's never been one that I've done alot of research on. I'm sure there is information out there though. Have I recieved, oh yeah, and are we worried? Not really. You don't really hear alot about people getting mouth cancer = doesn't mean it doesn't happen, it does, but you just don't hear about it much. Guess maybe I'll have to read a bit ... like I said, I've just never really thought much about it.

'That's not a graphic question at all-- it's good to be on the receiving end! haha ;)
I really don't think it's risky at all, I've never heard anything of the kind! I think maybe if you have a low-risk strain that causes a wart outbreak then maybe then it'd be best to avoid oral sex during that time (I think there's a chance the man could get oral condyloma). But if you have a high-risk strain, then I don't see how that could adversely affect the man at all. I really don't think it's something to worry too much about! So go ahead and enjoy! :)

IMO, not safe at all if warts are visible.. it there are no warts, no lesions or other tender lumpy things that can get open go for it.
Cuople of months ago, I'd have probably said it's all safe, whatever you do, considering that people have much more sever condition than this common virus. But, I read in this board about a woman who was infected with HPV (the high risk strains) and she got tonsil cancer beacuse of HPV! She did not know which speccific strains caused her that, and it might be entirely unrelated to our condition, yet something to think about. I don't want to freak out anyone, just something to keep in mind....use your discretion when both giving and recieving ;)

HPV causes mouth cancer. There are many have it. I was unsure if men were linked with HPV mouth cancer so I looked it up. A May 11,2007 article said that if men or women have had more than 6 sex partners you are both as risk of developing mouth cancer. If you have had sex with partners that have HVP then you are 32 times at greater risk to have mouth cancer. .It's been shown that men have an increased risk of a oral cancer rather than women.
I HATE HPV! I don't have it but from the stats I am sure to get it eventually.

Oh my gosh, that is scary! How do we get tested for mouth cancer?

The report did not say. It say that 12,000 and 15,000 new cases of mouth cancer are diagnosed each year, and about 3,000 people die from it. If you smoke your risk goes up another 3% and if you drink add 2.5% more.
It said if you add all the different cancers that men have from HPV like anal, penile, and mouth they are just about equal to number of cervical cancer from HPV in women.
Here I thought men had no consequences from having the disease. From that report they have just as many recorded HPV problems as women.

If you do a search for "oral sex" and "HPV", you'll find a lot of information, including articles regarding medical findings that show that oral sex on HPV-infected partners can cause oral cancers.
Seems that we just can't have any fun anymore, doesn't it!

Hi ladies,
I think we may be instilling a little too much fear in ourselves and in others who may be reading these posts. I am not saying that oral cancers are insignificant, but I really don't know how scared we should be by these reports. Considering how many people in this world have HPV and how few people get oral cancer, I can't think it's that much of a threat. I would think most of those cases of mouth cancer stem from more smoking cases or people with other immunodeficient diseases-- did these reports tell us whether people with oral cancer were solely due to HPV or perhaps they were smokers as well or had other illnesses that would compromise their immune systems? I'm not saying it's not serious or we should ignore it, but if we live in a constant state of fear surrounding HPV -- one of the most COMMON and PROLIFIC stds in the world-- then yeah, we'd live in a little isolated realm where all interaction with others would be terrorizing. Plus, none of my doctors or NPs have ever mentioned to me to have my boyfriend abstain from giving me oral sex as there's a *huge risk* that he'd get oral cancer. Why? Because there isn't a *huge risk.* If my boyfriend were a smoker, then I'd fear for his health on many other levels. Anyway that's just my opinion! We can't let HPV completely dominate our lives, we need to remember to enjoy our lives as well! :)

Well, I can tell ya this. The report said that smoking lowers your immune system. For 72 out of 100 in the study they tested positive for oropharyngeal cancer from HPV instead of Squamous cell carcinoma from smoking. Smoking lowers your immune system so if you have HPV it will increase the activity of HPV no matter if you are a man or woman.
Other part of the article compared HPV to HIV. It was said that the awareness of HIV should be that as well of HPV. Every year the numbers multiply for those infected with HPV. They never said to stop having oral sex they just stated that mouth cancer is spread through oral. Yes the numbers for HPV are low compared to HIV but the lackadaisical attitude and not using safe sex methods is how HPV is spread so easily and can easily catch up the HIV numbers.
HPV is just as common among the gay and lesbian community as it is the straight community.
They are going to do another study to compare the amount of people infected with HPV and mouth cancer who had the shot and who didn't.
I'm not saying get scared and wear a chastity belt but I don't think I'll be foot loose and fancy free with flings either.

Yeah I definitely second that, FromSqueaky-- I definitely won't be sleeping around anytime soon (well nor should I, as I'm in a committed relationship! haha!). Sometimes I think about my more promiscuous friends (with normal paps) and feel so envious that they have no cervical problems. And I wonder if that has to do more with the fact that my more promiscuous friends are using condoms more than those of us with long-term partners? I know condoms aren't 100% effective against the transmission of HPV, but I imagine it helps somewhat. Just a thought...
And yeah LCGirl, sign me up too for some of those chocolate-flavored condoms! just as long as it doesn't have spermicide on them, yuck! haha! Nah, I think as long as we're aware of the slight risk of oral cancers, we're still okay to enjoy a little oral fun as we're used to. We have enough problems to deal with regarding our cervical health!

I've been with my BF for 10 almost 11 years now. I had said I would not be foot loose and fancy free with a fling so that, maybe some one might think twice before bumping uglies.
