Hey guys! :)
I'm a 6'6" teenager, and I've noticed I've started having a "sleeping pill" problem haha.
I've always been a "night" person, and so for a while now I've noticed that I get a boost of energy late at night...so I've been taking sleeping pills on a regular basis for a long while now. First I started out with two Sleepy Time...then 3...4...and now I'm taking about 6-7 every night to get tired and sleep. I'm a bigger body build, so I haven't overdosed, though I did just about overdose when I took 10 to get so sleep (I woke up sweating and sooo exhausted, but not able to sleep).
I've never done drugs or smoked, and I'm a respected guy and class president of my Junior class...I want to be healthy, and I'm not really sure what to do...this past week, I went to a Music Camp, and I forgot my sleeping pills at home...every night, I couldn't sleep (get tired) till about 3am, and I was waking up at 8am each morning. What should I do, and is totally abandoning the pills really the safest thing right now?
Thanks guys :)

YOu need to get your parents to take you to a sleep specialist or at least discuss your sleep problem with your general practicioner. You may have a larger problem at work that is causing the insomnia... like sleep apnea. Insomnia is often an indicator of a greater sleep disorder lurking about.
Sleep medication should only be used as a last resort and only under the supervision of a qualified MD.
First look at the sleep hygiene post stickied at the top of the page. Look at the diet and exercise recommendations as well as sleep environment recs.. if you are doing all of this. Look into sleep apnea.. do you snore? Wake more than once a night more than 3 nights a week? Do you feel chronically fatigued? Do you remember dreaming? Can you stay awkae riding in a car for longer than 30 minutes? Do you feel the desire to sleep when you stop at a red light? If you answered 2 or more of these questions with a yes.. you should see a sleep specialist pronto.. Do you still have your tonsils and adnoids? Have allergies or acid reflux? Chronic respiratory ills? If so you need to see the sleep specialist in conjunction with and ENT/Allergist.
Best of luck and yes stop the sleeping pills and try chamomile tea instead.
Respectfully,
MG
