Far away from home or close
Large scale death or just a few
devastation to homes, lives, surroundings

I live it - in my head only. I feel I am there, yet ungrateful that I am not. Young people die when they have so much to live for, why them? Not feeling quite myself right now.

does it affect ptsd sufferers?????????????????? or ISITME again

Dear IM:

The lot of us with PTSD are extremely sensitive individuals.

Saying that, have you been paying attention to any of the mass mediums (news or paper e.g.)particularly close lately?

It is quite easy for a genuinely caring person to feel the sadness of the world:

The wars, tsunami's, hurricanes and the like, that take and never give back in return; i hear you loud and clear.

Compassionate souls are bound to feel remourse, as I am still guilty of such.

In my mind, to make sense of it all, I have to say that there are forces way beyond my control and from time to time nature gives them the authority to act as they do.

If I could cause World Peace, I would in less than a heartbeat but I am forever reminded of the yin/yang principal that states there must be an equal amount of good and bad for there to be harmony.

It is a deep concept but I am not here to sound like a school teacher.

As I stopped questioning the "why" of things, I found it easier to exist in the sea of uncertainty that we call life.

Your only curse may be that of caring too much...............

and if this is true, you are in good company here.

So it's not you, it's us.

Please share more if and when you feel comfortable.

We'll be here.

Take care
God Bless
Ryan

HI isitme,

I think having PTSD makes us more sensitive to others and the devastation in the world.... We hate injustice....We hate it when bad things happen, and are overly sensitive to it. That's my take on things anyway.

Crap I cry sometime with commercials.......

isitme........I'm with the rest of the group. Anything that I find to be an injustice, hurtful, trauam, disaster, etc. to even those I don't know I will cry for them. I believe it's because we understand that makes us have such a heightened sensitivty. I remember through all the news broadcasts after 9/11. I would sit and cry for hours. Got to the point where I couldn't come home from work and watch it anymore.

Right, so we're all overly sensitive people. Yes, the cap fits, so I'll wear it!

So how do we overcome it?

Not to the extent of being unsensitive, but when something happens, which has absolutely nothing to do with me personally, how do I NOT be affected. I
know the Gulf War anniversary did affect me, I switched the TV off, but lately, no matter how bad the situation is for some, I feel compelled to watch it regardless. Does that make any sense? Can anyone relate?
Does that also apply to ptsd sufferers?

isitme,

When 911 happened.... I had only the real basic TV channels...2-15 I think. When the news stations finally decides to move onto bigger and better news stories... I went BUGGY!!!!! I couldn't get enough of the 911 stories. I was going batty because I didn't have the upper channels....I called my cable company and NOW I HAVE them.... CNN and CNN headline news is my one and only!!!!! I have become a news junkie.

Yes I know where you are coming from. I went through it too. How do you stop if it's really effecting you...The off switch.......It the only way. Do something else. Cook, eat, clean, knit.. Walk, exercise.....Just get away from the TV.....

Other than that you could spend hours on the boards.....LOL

(remember, this is only my opinion)

Sometimes depressed people will gravitate towards something that is close to home(especially catastrophies) or familiar to the way they are feeling at a particular point in time (life experience).

It is quite easy to be "drawn in" to all the sadness brought about by such devastating events.

So how do we overcome it?

I believe that it is a matter of "breaking" the cycle.

Realizing that your sadness became entangled with theirs and it is not doing you any good to wallow in it.

Sid is right with the "off switch" but the question you are probably having is "how to find that switch."

Sometimes it helps to merely take suggestions from the others who have been through similar circumstances.

Then there are times that the answers are so obvious, so near in proximity that all we have to do is take the time out to realize them (and take off our glasses, metaphorically).

Take care
God Bless

I'm glad to hear it's 'us' - as opposed to just me, another part of the ptsd. I can't blame it on depression! I don't feel depressed, saddened by injustices of the world at large, whether natural or man made. I understand the 'off switch'. I turned it off with my son years ago because of the pain he gave me, yet never knew I had the ptsd then. I am slowly trying to mend the situation. The fear of speaking to him/seeing him is lessening. (I've been working on this for months)! I stay at the thinking stage for so long regards doing anything..............

Does becoming skeptical also have something to do with having ptsd?
You're all a great support, thank you.
