i see that this has already been brought up a couple of times, but i started the depo shot just over a month ago before my wedding. when i went to planned parenthood, the woman who injected me said that the chances of getting pregnant on the shot are slim, if you keep up-to-date on it. she said there might be spotting, and some women have no period whatsoever. i havent had a period yet, but the last couple of days i started a light bleeding. she also had said that if you DO bleed on the shot, it might not be working. im wondering if im pregnant, or if its normal.

thanks,

young wife

I was on the depo shot for 9 months and if I recall, I had a little spotting like that, too. You can alway do a pregnancy test if you want to be sure. Sometimes the health professional workers don't always give right information... I've learned that with a recent experience.

Spotting is NOT an indication the shot is not working. Nor is it an indication of pregnancy. If you are worried that you may be pregnant, take a test. The hormones in the shot will not effect pregnancy test results whatsoever, as pregnancy tests look for HCG, and the shot contains only Progesterone.

That said, the shot is not 100% effective, but is close. If you are not over-due for your next shot, and were on your period when you got the shot (or at least abstained from sex for seven days after getting it if you got it after your period ended), then the chances of you getting prengnant are very, very small.
