Hello, I just had a surgery consultation regarding my TMJ issues. I was told that I have cysts in my left TMJ, and degenative bone disease... My surgeon suggested a removal of the TMJ disc. Has anyone had this done? any info one can provide will be great. My surgeon is also a Prof. of Oral Surgery for the University of Texas and will be conducting the surgery. I don't know if I should live with it until it gets completely intolerable or have the surgery done and over with. I know this is a personal decision however, if others that had their disc's removed share their experiences it will help me in the decision process. What to expect with this type of procedure?? regardless, of who my doctor is I still am a little aprehensive which is only natural I guess..Thanks, Steve

I have cysts and osteoarthritis of my tmj. The MRI showed that the disc was almost gone. But my doctor just went in and removed the scar tissue around the disc so that I could open wider and not have as much pain. I'm not sure if that's an option for you, but my surgery was only slightly invasive, not major like removal of the disc.
