I've seen those little grey floating ghosts since childhood. It's most noticeable when I'm reading, because they move when your eyes move. I believe they're called "vitreous floaters." I found a description of their cause, etc., (see below), but you should see an opthalmologist to evaluate your condition and provide advice on how best to deal with them. Good health to you. A DESCRIPTION: What you describe is fairly classic for a vitreous floater. The vitreous is a jelly like substance which changes consistency as we age. This change causes the vitreous to separate from the retina. When this happens, the back of the vitreous can be seen as a floater. Most people describe this as a spider web or floating speck. High myopia and trauma can make vitreous separations occur earlier. It is also possible for clumping to occur within the vitreous which can appear as floaters without an actual vitreous separation. In either case, it is important to know that floaters can be associated with a tear in the retina and retinal detachments. Anyone with increasing floaters, flashing lights or fixed black areas in his vision should be reexamined. Since you saw your ophthalmologist, he should have checked for these things. This information is provided for educational purposes only. Please see you physician for diagnostic and treatment options. Hodor 03-12-2001, 03:57 PM Did you ever think you might be experiencing silent migraines? I've had this experience. It doesn't sound like floaters because floaters can't be seen with your eyes closed. I know what you mean by this light show. I have eliminated them by staying away from migraine triggers like all caffeine, monsodium glutamate(also known as autolyzed yeast extract), artificial sweetners, artificial flavors, red wine and smoked foods. Believe me it wasn't easy, but it has been worth it. You would be shocked of how much of this stuff you can consume in a day. rys 08-28-2001, 11:45 AM Hodor, You mentioned that you got rid of your 'snow' by changing your diet. Can you let me know exactly what you did, and how long it took? I too experience this snow all the time, especially at night, and even with my eyes closed. I have had this for at least 2-3 years but I feel like it's getting worse now, and the doctors that I have seen can't find anything wrong. Can you please leave me an email address or other contact info such as icq? thanks. I see them at all times, most clearly when I am looking at something light colored. They can also be seen with my eyes closed if I am in a lighted or sunny area. Enjoy |
