I can tell when I'm high--like this morning my reading was 170/130 and I realize that that's bad--but just how bad--what is a dangerous reading?

You should go to the ER. 130 is too high. Perhaps your monitor is inaccurate. The ER will check your cuff for free. Fam

Hi there...

My numbers run the gauntlet between 220/160 and 140/80 on a daily basis... but I have a condition that causes this and the Dr's know about it.

It sounds like you might be experiencing a hypertensive crisis, this is a medical emergancy and needs to be taken care of immediatly. High Blood pressure is not called the "Silent Killer" for nothing!

If that lower number goes above 120 and stays there you stand a serious risk for stroke and MI along with kidney and other organ damage.

If this is a chronic thing and is associated with severe swings and fluctuations of your BP then it needs to be evaluated and the cause found.

Best of luck and please let us know how you are doing!

Thank you all--it may indeed be the cuff, but I seem to have weathered the day in spite of it (still have the darn migraine, but BP is 195/114 and hopefully going down again).

I knew it wasn't good, but how bad I just didn't know, now I know and should it happen again, I'll give my GP a ring.

Thanks again.

Your readings are still pretty high and firmly in the stage 2 hypertension range.

Are you currently being treated for HBP?

Either way, you should go ahead and place a call this coming week explaining that high reading your symptoms and what you were doing before it as well as your other readings.

Best of wishes and please let us know how things go.
