Hi Beth,
I'm so excited for you regarding your b/p decrease. Just the boost you need for job hunting. I couldn't find the info about using Clonidine for Pheo. From my perspective it doesn't sound like a good idea. It made me so nervous & jettery besides the mental clouding. I think it increased my b/p but couldn't tell for sure because of all the nasty side effects which probably raised it. Oh, & I wanted to ask you if your Dr. had you titrate HCTZ when you took it. I've read that slowly introducing some drugs helps to decrease side effects. Hope everything continues to go well for you. Fam

Hi Fam,
Just thought I'd take a moment to check the boards and immediately saw your post! Thanks for the words of encouragement and support re: the bp readings. This am it was 120/70 but I check it throughout the day....I did have one day where it went over 160/90 but only one day in the last 5 weeks isn't bad, so I continue to monitor and will proceed accordingly. My last bp med interfered with my sleep so I stopped taking it one day (so I could get uninterrupted sleep that night) and slept so well that I just couldn't bring myself to taking another pill....and my bp just dropped. I do think the side effects can elevate bp but I have no proof...and I have some other theories as well, but will keep them to myself until I am convinced my bp is under control....and yes, I do not fool myself into thinking I do not have high blood pressure---I certainly do, but I can control how to manage it.
As far as the clonidine goes, I have read that they do a "clonidine suppression test" to test for pheo! When I saw "clondine", I thought of you and your bad reaction. I've reread the info on it and from what I understand, it is a one time oral dose---blood is drawn before and after, and then tested for results. Beta blockers and thiazide diuretics (among other things) can give a false positive and for that reason these meds are discontinued 48 hours before the test.
As far as the hctz goes, I started out on a low dose, either 12.5 or 25 mg, but I would have to check. It was effective at lowering my bp immediately. However, my bp crept up and the dose had to be increased. I believe that the reason my bp crept up was because the fatigue interferred with my energy level so much that my lack of activity and my poor eating habits contributed to the problem.
But I would agree with your doctor about slowly introducing a med....and I will keep that in mind when I go on another med, as undoubtedly, I will need to.
Oh, and as far the hctz goes, it is one of those drugs that was never tested on older adults!!! Which kind of blows my mind since it is so widely prescribed. Will have to do a little blurb on the boards regarding that info...
The job hunting hasn't started yet, despite my accumulating debt. I really need to focus on diet and exercise now so I don't "relapse"...will set a goal of Sept 1 for employment but must be active now for lots of reasons.
I'm awful glad we're "staying in touch". I think of you often and hope and pray that your health improves daily.

Now I remember reading about a "Clonidine Suppression Test." I'll be very interested in your theories regarding b/p & the info re: HCTZ. It took about a month for it to decrease my b/p. I'm the one not the Drs' who insisted on titrating most of my meds. I'm working on cutting down my calories. Lately, I've had trouble with some foods causing stomach problems. I'm down to 162 most days from 166 so I'm going in the right direction. Losing wt. & refining my stress reduction program are my only hopes in decreasing my b/p at the moment. Some meds do indeed increase rather than decrease b/p in certain people. That reaction is called a Paradoxical effect. The pkg insert for Clonidine lists that for a side effect for some people. I had initially asked my PC Dr. what that meant & she said she didn't know. Then I looked up the word to see if it meant what I thought it meant. A pharmacist confirmed my suspicion. I think the stress of dealing with hypertension (Drs, drugs, lifestyle change, etc.) does increase stress which in turn increases b/p to a certain degree especially those of us who have resistent HBP. I wouldn't worry about a few b/p increases. It's sustained b/p that causes the problems. Take care. Fam

Hi Fam,
I don't know how long it took for hctz to decrease my pressure but I was checked after 1 month and it was normal at that time. I'm glad you shared your experience with titrating the medication. More people (myself included) need to know what our options are! We need to be proactive because if we aren't, it's very possible our health could spiral downwards out of control---and we wouldn't be the first.
I'm sure you're please with your weight reduction! It's marvelous and I'm confident you'll continue to lose...those first pounds can be the hardest sometimes. I haven't done anything about my weight but must do so as I am 50+ overweight and I firmly believe that if I was a normal weight bp would not be an issue for me. But the pounds didn't pack on overnight so I can't expect them to fall off overnight (unlike the week after I disco'd atenonol, GRIN!), so I must start working at it. A friend of mine has lost over 100 pounds of weight!!! And wouldn't you know she didn't have high blood pressure when she was at her highest---but she doesn't eat meats so I guess it's understandable.
I appreciate the info on Pardoxical Effect! I wonder if it is a bio-chemical effect or is it a reaction to side effects? Maybe both? At least now I have a term I can do some research with. Although I used to think that my weight gain on bp meds drove up my blood pressure, I'm now thinking otherwise---I've only lost about 12 bp med pounds but my pressure continues to hover in the 120-70 range...but who know? Maybe my sleep apnea treatment has kicked in. I WISH I had treated my apnea before I started taking bp meds....I think alot of my problems could have be avoided had I done this..
Oh, and last but not least, I was talking with a friend yesterday and her doctor is a professor at the university....they have a satelite clinic about an hour from here (which I had known about but had forgotten) so I'm going to see if I can't get a doctor's appt at that clinic. My FORMER doctor told me I would always be on medication...and I suppose someday, given my poor eating habits, I may. BUT, right now, I consider myself prehypertensive, and given the side effects I personally have experienced on meds, I will risk not taking meds at this time in my life, and consentrate on diet and exercies.
Alas, again I ramble. Oh but I also wanted to thank you for the heads up on reading materials in a previous post. Must hit the libraries.
Thanks again for your feedback, insights, and support as I appreciate and value all!

Hi Beth,
I'm curious about your friend who lost 100 lbs. You mentioned that she didn't eat meat & didn't have HBP. Do you think there is a connection? I don't eat meat, chicken, or fish, but I do eat eggs & cheese. I'm making a big pot of veggie soup & pea soup today. I freeze most of my food so I can just take small portions out. Because of my acid reflux I find it easier to eat in the am & then just have milk at supper. That way I can swim in the afternoon without having to wait until my food leaves my stomach. I'm behind in my cooking. If I have good healthy food ready then I won't be as likely to eat too much bread etc. Have you tried listening to books on tape etc while walking etc. There was an article that mentioned pairing something you like with something you don't. Simlar to my pairing raspberry jam, pumpkin, & yogurt with my Lebetalol (in liquid form) or as Mary Poppings said "A spoon full of sugar makes the medicine go down." :) Fam

Hi Fam,
As far as meat and high blood pressure goes, there is definitely a connection...meat-cholesterol-plaque-narrowed arteries-high blood pressure. My friend isn't a vegetarian but she doesn't like meat! And she eats lots of fruits and veggies which is good for many health reasons...alas, tho, I suspect her diet lacked balance (soft on protein) and that is why her weight got so out of control (she was over 300 pounds but is now looking like a tiny little person).
I'm making a big pot of veggie soup & pea soup today. I freeze most of my food so I can just take small portions out.
Sounds WONDERFUL!!!....I'll be right over--where do you live :)? You sound very well organized! I need to get in the habit of doing that, too. I used to cook and freeze things when I was younger...but then I developed baaaad habits (fast food). I've started a new habit this month...I now add molasses (high in iron) to my oatmeal in the am. Mmmmm.
You don't have to wait for your food to digest to swim (that is to say if that's why you wait)...The myth about waiting an hour after you eat before swimming was a falacy that the Red Cross created many, many years ago. Actually, I learned the myth when I was a lifeguard. I've since learned that it may not be comfortable to swim with a full stomach, but it's not dangerous to do so...
Must get tapes and music to walk by...and I MUST start swimming again. I used to swim laps regularly but gave it up when I started taking hydrochlorothiazide...I realize that now, of course. Didn't see the connection then.
I'm at 117/72 today...have been holding my own without meds and without my doctor's blessing. I shot up to 161 over something on Tuesday last week but can definitely attribute that to some salty food I ate in a restaurant the night before (I was retaining fluid the next day)...so salt is not my friend---but I don't watch my salt intake, I just don't add salt to what I eat. Am actually looking forward to my lab work at the end of July. Am anxious to prove my doctor wrong on more than 1 issue.

Hi Beth,
Don't worry about adding molasses to your Oatmeal!!! The fact that you are eating oatmeal for bk. makes you ahead of the pack!!! Isn''t molasses good for calcium too?
Jane Brody (NY times) in one of her nutrition columns about 10 yrs ago said to have a few treats that you wouldn't overdo on in your daily diet. I believe in having a lifelong diet instead of a weight loss diet. I try to keep creating lower cal/fat/sugar versions of my favorite foods but then there are some dishes that just have to remain intact. Just have less of them less often.
You are probably right about your friend's diet. While vegetables have protein especially the bean family, a persons needs more veg. protein gms to come to equal
meat protein gms. Eggs have quality protein & are the standard which other protein sources are compared. I
count my protein gms everyday so I don't get short.
I love salt!!! So I don't usually cook with salt for myself, but add it to each food serving so I can keep track of how much I use. I like to see it & tast it on food. One time I really went on a very low sodium diet (before b/p meds) for two months. My b/p didn't change a bit. I should do that again to see if there would be a change. but then again I would be a little nervous since I'm on a diuretic & might have the electrolyte issues.
You should swim especially if you have all that training as a lifeguard. I don't swim very well especially since my upper arms were damaged by Cozaar. I have to wear a foam wrap around vest to help keep me up in the water. I didn't need that before Cozaar. A lifeguard saved me from drowning when I was 14 so I have great respect for lifeguards. I took swim lessons for 1 yr.until we got to the diving part & the chlorine allergy to hold.
Once you really get into exercise the feel good hormones kick in & you are sold. It is so relaxing. Fam

Hello Fam!
Thanks so much for the motivational post! I enjoy reading your posts, however, I postpone (pardon the pun) responding to them until I have some quality time to spend---usually with my am coffee.
Yup, I like oatmeal, thank goodness. Breakfast is my favorite time to eat but has my least favorite foods so it's often oatmeal. I don't know about the calcium connection in molasses--will check--yup, 4% daily value based on a 2000 calorie diet...another perk, ;) .
... I try to keep creating lower cal/fat/sugar versions of my favorite foods but then there are some dishes that just have to remain intact. Just have less of them less often.
I agree, with Jane Brody to an extent. Some foods (Pepperidge Farm Cookies, for instance) I simply can't keep in the house. And yes, I know, some dishes just aren't the same dishes with substitutions...but that's a good idea to have them less frequently. I'm trying to cut down the serving size when I make my favorite dishes so I make a 2 serving size instead of a 6 serving size. Ideally, I would freeze the extra portions but I tend to be a binge eater and frozen portions would not stop me from eating the same thing at breakfast, lunch, and supper.
Need to do more on protein education. Have long wanted to be a vegetarian but lack the nutrional knowledge to do so safely. Have a book about becoming a vegetarian gradually but haven't read it yet, .
Yes, I'd be careful about the salt reduction given the diuretic. I'm still trying to understand my hypersensitivity to medication but from what I've read, that brain fog may have been a result of electrolyte imbalance. I suspect it continued when I was on medications other than diuretics because I was so sleep deprived that my diet was horrendous--again, many bread and butter sandwiches washed down with milk. My experience with salt is that I see a reaction within a few hours of eating it. Sometimes it doesn't affect me, but sometimes I can see the swelling in my eyelids, wrists, and ankles right away. So I'm thinking that if it didn't affect you in the past it may not be as much of an issue--but that's not to say that it won't change.
Yes, after reading your post, I looked up pool times (they always change because of summer hours) so I can start doing laps again. It is wonderful therapy. Have you thought about looking for a physical therapist who can help you with water exercizes in the pool? Water can be very beneficial, as you probably already know, because you don't have to stress the joints. Heated pools also can be beneficial.
... Once you really get into exercise the feel good hormones kick in & you are sold. It is so relaxing. Fam
Yes, yes, yes but I needed to be reminded of that!! I need to start now because I KNOW that one reason my bp is in check is because I'm more active now that I'm off of medication...and when the weather becomes cooler, my activity will decrease so I've got to start exercising now!!!
I'm down to 208 from 220+ pounds. I weighed less than 200 pounds before bp meds so it's dropping slowly. I"m not conciously watching my weight but must do so as I am going to be 10 pounds lighter for my check up at the end of the month. I'm hoping that will be enough weight loss to move me from pre-hypertensive into normal...but I think of Flowergirl when she said more or less "my normal has changed"...so who knows?
Good hearing from you, as always. I'll keep you posted on the swimming.
Bsheba
PS I never "saved" anyone as a lifeguard...thank goodness, I didn't have to. Am very greatful to that lifeguard for saving you as you are saving others, but in a different way. Did teach toddlers swimming lessons, thought. That was fun!

Hi Beth,
Wow, 12lbs lost!!! You are doing great. I've been doing better keeping my food record & my journal. Both really help me. I messed up one day cause I ate too much before I wrote down my intake. My eyes almost popped when I saw 2,000 calories!!!
I tried combining my walk with swimming. I got so exhausted that day (not while swimming) & the next day. Being on such a high dose beta blocker just won't let me do both. So I'm back to walking in the AM & swimming in the afternoon.
I'm taking a break from taking my b/p. My "cuff anxiety" just reared it's ugly head & I got sick of it!!! I had been playing around with my doses taking more in the am & less in the pm but the same daily dose. Withdrawal is certainly dramatic with beta blockers. I don't see how FG got off Labetalol-it would take me forever.
This week I'm going to concentrate on making some of my favorite foods that I haven't had in a while. I'm with you regarding trying to keep high cal treats in the house. I don't do it but my husband buys lots of goodies. Usually his choice of treats isn't what I want unless I'm desparate.
Oh, I finally hit 161 so its 5 lb mark. Dr. Laura says to give yourself some kind of reward. The reward I would like most is more time to do what I like. So today I just kind of lounged around & pretended I was a pampered Queen & could do whatever I choose. I think I will buy myself a Tea Pot if I can find one. My favorite teapot was broken in our many moves. When I've lost weight in the past, I've never done the reward thing which I think was a mistake.
I have some info from my readings but I can't lay my hands on them at the moment. Fam
