My 26 month old adopted daughter has just been dx'd with focal cortical dysplasia after an MRI yesterday. It is in the mid-back region of the brain where messages are sent from the eyes to the brain. Rather than ribbon like tissues, her neurologist said they were thick, wavy, and broken.
The doctor said she would likely have a visual processing disorder, and other learning disorders that will become apparent in the future. She also may be prone to seizures.
The question is, how does this link up to her previous dx's of torticollis of infancy, nas, arnd, fasd, sensory integration disorder, and central auditory processing disorder.
I have read that focal cortical dysplasia can be linked to migraines - as seizures can, and torticollis of infancy can. Some seizures are mild, and we may not have noticed that she had them, but linked the behaviour to other challenges she has (FASD, and prenatal cocaine use by mother), but would the torticollis with the FCD make her more prone to seizures?
I have also read that FCD can possibly be linked to autism and severe learning disabilities that become apparent after seizure activity, where speech and language as well as cognitive skills go into regression.
Can you give me an idea of what this might look like in her future?
(*note, my younger brother has epilepsy brought on through a car accident/head trauma, but possibly present prior to the accident at age 5. After his year with severe grande mal seizures, his intelligence apparently dropped so he is now - at age 28 - moderately mentally delayed; not able to live on his own, and on disability because he cannot work.)
