I was wondering if anyone takes more than one SSRI? I think I've read it being called a 'cocktail'? I have taken Paxil for 6.5 yr and it's not working anymore. I tried to change to Lexapro, and it did not agree with me at all, then I tried Cymbalta, and it worked but I was nervous all the time. So my doc put me back on Paxil and doubled my dose to 40 mg. It's just not working.
I am going to see her on Tuesday, and I was thinking of asking for Celexa. My homeopath said I should slowly wean off the Paxil and I slowly go on the Celexa instead of stopping cold turkey, and she thinks my nervousness on the other meds was from Paxil withdrawal from stopping all at once.
Any input would be appreciated! :dizzy:

There is a book called a Physician's Desk Reference which tells everything a dr. might want to know about a drug. It states in there that Paxil should be gradually tapered off or other symptoms can occur.

Yes, I have that book, and I know you have to taper off Paxil. That is why I was wanting to taper off it when starting a new med, rather that just drop the Paxil cold turkey, which my doc had to do last time. Thanks!

If it was me, I would ask the dr. to decrease 10mg. a week like the PDR says, and ask her if at the same time it is safe to start the lowest dose of the other medication, so it would kinda even up in the brain, you know? If this is a possible way to do this, maybe it could eliminate those other symptoms you get. It would be worth a try if she agrees. Good luck!

I've read that you can't take more then one SSRI at a time because of the Syndrome. But some people will take a mood stabilizer or anti-anxiety med along with it. Only your doctor should know if you should ween or not and if you don't feel comfortable with their answer ask someone else. Good luck with it.

My doc told me if upping the Paxil didn't work I would need to see a psychiatrist because they are chemists with these drugs. So I did make an app with a psych, but I can't get in until mid August. I did call my pharmacy and asked the pharmacist if I could mix the two, gradually upping the celexa and lowering the paxil and she said yes. Just can't take a lot of both at the same time. Have you all changed meds, and how did you go about it? Did it take several tries to find the right med?

When I was at one of CA's best psychiatric hospitals, I was put on a cocktail that saved my life. I take Cymbalta, Wellbutrin, Neurontin and Seroquel. Currently it is wonderful and its been almost 10 months.
